The highly anticipated upcoming film by director Christopher Nolan, known for his critically acclaimed movies, is reportedly “The Odyssey”. Following the success of his 2023 Best Picture winner, “Oppenheimer”, which garnered $975 million globally, this new project promises to deliver another cinematic masterpiece. With a stellar cast in place, some exciting role announcements could be on the horizon.
In simple terms, “The Odyssey,” together with “The Iliad,” are two legendary epic poems penned by Homer and considered among the world’s most recognized works of literature. Filmmaker Christopher Nolan is now working on bringing this timeless story to life in a unique cinematic adaptation like none before.
It appears that Film Discussions are suggesting that various Greek media sources are sharing details about the cast of an upcoming film titled The Odyssey. If this is accurate, Matt Damon will likely portray Odysseus, while Anne Hathaway might be playing Penelope, his wife. Tom Holland could be taking on the role of their grown son, Telemachus. Charlize Theron may depict the ancient sorceress Circe, who infamously transformed Odysseus’ men into swine. Benny Safdie and Lupita Nyong’o might embody Agamemnon and Clytemnestra, rulers of Troy. Lastly, Zendaya could be brought to life as the protective goddess Athena. However, it is essential to note that Universal Pictures has not officially confirmed any of these roles, but they do align with images that have been trickling out in recent days.
Here’s just a taste of the talented ensemble gracing the screen in The Odyssey. Among the stars are Robert Pattinson from The Batman, Elliot Page of Inception, Mia Goth known for X, Corey Hawkins who shone in Straight Outta Compton, Jon Bernthal of The Punisher fame, Cosmo Jarvis from Shōgun, Himesh Patel best recognized from Tenet, Samantha Morton of Minority Report, John Leguizamo most recently seen in Encanto, and Will Yun Lee who was in The Wolverine. Filming commenced on February 25, 2025, initially in Aït Benhaddou, Morocco, then shifting to Sicily, Italy, and finally Greece.
‘The Odyssey’s Impressive Cast Makes It One of 2026’s Biggest Blockbusters
In theory, a high-priced remake of “The Odyssey” might appear as a daring venture, given that Warner Bros.’ interpretation of The Iliad, “Troy” from 2004, was perceived as a box office flop. However, Christopher Nolan has not only proven himself worthy of a blank check but also demonstrated his ability to attract audiences to watch unique blockbusters. The positive reception he garnered from his “Dark Knight” trilogy encouraged viewers to attend original blockbusters like “Inception,” “Interstellar,” and “Dunkirk.” Remarkably, he transformed a dialogue-heavy period piece such as “Oppenheimer,” a film about the inventor of the atomic bomb, into the third highest-grossing movie globally in 2023, outperforming major films like “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning,” “Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny,” and “Fast X.
Universal Pictures is really going all out for Nolan’s latest project, securing a premium release date in mid-July, a slot his films usually thrive in. The epic retelling of Homer’s “The Odyssey” will even grace IMAX screens, pushing back the release of “Spider-Man 4” by a week to ensure some distance from Christopher Nolan’s upcoming potential blockbuster. Despite being an adaptation, with roots tracing back to one of the oldest recorded texts in history, the grandeur of this film – featuring an acclaimed director and a star-studded cast – seems more like an original production than the typical IP franchise films that have dominated cinemas recently.
