Shocking Death: The Last of Us Actor Reveals Jesse’s Heart-Wrenching Season 2 Moment!

In the finale of Season 2, Jesse’s character was unexpectedly terminated, catching viewers off guard, regardless of whether they were aware of his demise in the source material.

In a conversation about it, the actor reminisced on the season finale and his role as , before landing the part in the TV series. He commented, “I’m accustomed to endless ammo; I fire away nonstop“. But then, he found himself searching for empty shells since he ran out of bullets. Just two minutes into the game level, he needed to switch the difficulty to the simplest setting. “Otherwise, I contemplated, ‘This will take me three years to finish,'” he mused, hinting that he was aware Jesse’s character would meet his end“.

Surprisingly, Jesse met an untimely end, and it left viewers without a moment’s respite before the suspenseful cliffhanger. Earlier in the episode, Ellie discovered Abby’s location and decided to chase after her, while Jesse connected with Tommy. Both followed Abby, but Ellie managed to avenge Joel’s death by eliminating his killers, except for Abby, who trailed Ellie’s group as they fled to the theater.

In a quick altercation, they hastily exited, and Abby ended up shooting Jesse in the head. This scene was so captivating that Mazino returned for additional filming, despite his character being deceased. “Bella [Ramsey] accidentally hurt her lip,” Mazino clarified, “so we had to reshoot.” However, he expressed his desire to be present at the shooting as Jesse’s body, allowing Bella to establish a more genuine connection with him rather than a stunt double or prop.

The actor went on, “Dude, I was under this enormous clay mask all over my face – it looked like nothing more than a blob of gunk and clay. But I appreciate good performances, and they were truly exceptional.” He also remembered the climactic moment in the finale when Jesse mentioned having a chance to escape Jackson but didn’t. Mazino noted that scene provided a deep insight into Jesse’s character.

Mazino stated, “This behavior demonstrates his aloofness, which he uses to make a statement. In other words, staying with the group instead of leaving for Mexico [with a woman] is very characteristic of Jesse, but he uses this moment to say, ‘Ellie, can you see what it takes to do the right thing?’ Unfortunately, it doesn’t have the desired effect. He realizes that she’s confused and there’s no changing her mind. However, this is the moment where he expresses his hope for her well-being.

Deceased Characters Could Still Appear In The Last of Us

Mazino confessed that he might have made a different choice in real life. ‘I’m more of a solitary, withdrawn, unsociable person,’ he explained. ‘And that’s true about Jesse as well.’ However, during the finale, I would have chosen to follow my lover to Mexico instead. That’s where we differ – Jesse is strict with the rules. I’ve always been impulsive and rash by nature, and I often find myself in trouble because of it. So, I likely wouldn’t have made it as far as Jesse has, but I definitely would have gone to Mexico.

If the creators of the series, Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann, decide to bring back characters like Jesse and Joel who have passed away, then Mazino is open to it. However, he mentioned that this decision ultimately lies with the creators. “I’m game for it, although I believe I might be contractually bound,” he said, indicating his readiness even if it’s not a certainty. In other words, “If they wish to delve into this possibility, I’m on board regardless.

The Last of Us Season 2 is streaming on HBO Max.
