As a long-time viewer of “The Ark”, I must say that the demise of Lieutenant Spencer Lane has left a significant void in the show. Having followed their journey since the very beginning, it’s hard not to feel a sense of loss when one of the original characters departs. However, I appreciate the writers’ decision to give us a glimpse into the complexities of clone life and the cruel reality of the GSA’s clone breeding program.
Man, it’s incredible how Season 2 of “The Ark” keeps serving us one shocking science fiction twist after another. Already heartbreaking with the loss of a significant character from Season 1 due to a fatal space incident (and subsequently subjecting other characters to immense torment), the popular SYFY series just dropped its most jaw-dropping revelation yet in Season 2, Episode 9 titled “Cycle of Violence.
Regrettably, one of the original key characters from The Ark has suffered an untimely death, brought about by deceitful actions. This unfortunate event has put the Ark One and its crew on the brink of their seemingly predestined space journey. This week’s shocking turn of events brings a significant shift in the narrative, leaving Captain Sharon Garnet and her team in pieces emotionally… a change that will undoubtedly resonate as Season 2 moves towards an unpredictable end.

What happened on The Ark Season 2, Episode 9, “Cycle of Violence”?
For several weeks, spectators have been given glimpses from afar of the ominous Eastern Alliance (EA), a human space group known for their violent actions wherever their enigmatic ships dare to travel. Their secretive motives contradict – completely – with the Global Space Council (GSC) and its fleet of survivor ships, such as Ark One. In the final episode of last week, the Eastern Alliance presented itself as a direct threat when, out of nowhere, an enormous EA ship appeared and aimed its primary cannon directly at Ark One as the end credits began to roll.
In this week’s installment, we find ourselves immediately resuming from last time, as Garnet instructs the Ark One to execute an instant faster-than-light (FTL) escape maneuver, fleeing before a formidable EF vessel and its powerful cannon could strike. However, the plot thickens when the adversary ship succeeds in tracing the Ark One throughout its FTL journey, hinting that there might be someone or something aboard that’s exposing the Ark One’s weak spot.
In a predicament with no other choice but to engage or communicate, Garnet receives a call from the enemy vessel EF-2. This sets the stage for an intense standoff between them and Captain Zed Avega (Daniel Fathers), a tough-talking commander. It’s later revealed that the Eastern Federation is searching for one of their absconded crew members, and surprisingly enough, the missing person is none other than Bojan (Vasilije Batricevic) – the late brother of Ark One’s maintenance chief Eva Markovic (Tiana Upcheva).
For those who watched Season 2, it’s clear that Eva has a hidden past with the Eastern Federation, a shady history that’s resurfaced, causing doubt among all crew members on the Ark One – everyone except for Eva’s devoted boyfriend, Lt. James Brice (Richard Fleeshman). Despite Lt. Spencer Lane’s (Reece Ritchie) assertions, based on his suspicion, that Eva might be the reason the EF can trace their ship initially, Brice vehemently disputes this claim, struggling to contain his indignation and protect Eva.
During the recent post-show webcast for “After the Ark,” Ritchie admitted that portraying Lane required him to tap into his grittier, more abrasive acting persona on occasion. Interestingly, he found that there was an endearing straightforwardness in Lane’s aloof demeanor.
Ritchie stated, “The writers have been fortunate for me because they’ve gradually revealed his complexities over time.” … He often finds that the kindest individuals he encounters can be quite abrasive initially, a trait he appreciates. Honesty is something he values deeply, and when someone like Lane shows their true self early on, it makes him feel comfortable while others may hesitate. He tends to move closer to such people instead.
Which major character died on The Ark this week?
If only Lane possessed the calm demeanor of his counterpart Ian, who is similar to him yet more easygoing, much like their GSA clone portrayed by Ritchie. Sharing scenes with his genetic twin since their rescue from a radioactive asteroid in recent episodes, it appears that Ian’s ability to remain composed during tense situations where Lane often loses control, has been just another sibling trait – until now, it seems like nothing more than a simple difference between the brothers.
In the emotional unfolding of this week’s episode, it’s clear that things are not as simple as they seem. Captain Zed of EF wins Garnet’s trust and negotiates a peace treaty ensuring no casualties from either ship. However, just when it seems like significant progress is being made on the Ark One, Zed’s right-hand man from EF betrays him in the most treacherous way possible. This deceitful snake plunges a concealed dagger into his own captain, and at the same time, it appears that Zed and Garnet are making significant diplomatic strides. The fight that ensues results in fatal injuries for both Zed and Lt. Lane, with internal organ damage that is lethal unless there happens to be a spare human organ or two available for transplant… which is a grim possibility indeed.
Amidst the chaos and distress, there’s an added burden of tight deadlines. Zed’s EF vessel has taken two Ark One crew members as hostages, a reciprocal guarantee ensuring Captain Zed’s safety during his stay on the Ark One as Garnet’s diplomatic guest. However, harm has now befallen their captain, regardless of who is responsible. This puts Zed’s subordinates in a precarious position, and they’ve issued threats to open fire if their commander doesn’t return safely to their ship.
As Dr. Kabir (Shalini Peiris) and Dr. Marsh (Jadran Malkovich) concur, they both acknowledge the challenging outlook for each of their injured patients. Captain Zed might have a chance at survival with a liver transplant, but regrettably, Lane’s stab wounds are fatal – he won’t make it. This shocking revelation leaves Garnet in deep mourning, immobilized by her grief as her enemies from EF eagerly seek updates on their captain’s condition.
In this spot, Ian subtly guides Garnet towards the difficult yet unavoidable decision she must make. As genetically engineered siblings, Ian has an unusual intuition about what his clone “brother,” Lane, might choose in a dire situation such as this one. Since it’s now impossible for Lane to survive, he can make one final selfless act by donating his liver to save Captain Zed’s life, thus easing the dangerous tension on both ships and potentially saving everyone involved.
As a devoted admirer, I wholeheartedly concur with Ian’s sentiments, even when Lane is unconscious and can’t voice his own thoughts. After all, Garnet and Spencer Lane have been through a lot together – so much that it feels like they’ve survived hell. From restoring our trust after Lane’s brave but foolhardy mutiny in Season 1, to forging a close friendship in Season 2 that uncovers unexpected similarities between them, such as their shared clone status. This bond was something we could never have anticipated!
Ultimately, despite everything, it’s important to acknowledge that the harsh truth persists: The “Cycle of Violence” episode this week signifies the final moments of Lt. Lane as a significant character in the series The Ark.
What does The Ark’s big character death mean for the show?
There’s no way around it: It’s tough to watch one of The Ark’s most crucial and lore-steeped characters vanish from the show. But there’s also a sort of sneaky genius to the way that Season 2 has been slowly building, all this time, with the kind of story backdrop that allows Lt. Lane to at least live on in spirit.
As a devoted fan, I’ve always appreciated the intricate plotlines on “After the Ark.” In an interview during the aftershow, co-showrunner and executive producer Jonathan Glassner revealed that Lane’s departure this week was meticulously planned from the start. You see, Lane strongly disliked clones in Season 1, and as it turns out, he himself is a clone! This revelation sets him on a downward spiral. We learn that his type of clone was specifically created to be organ donors… And here’s an exciting twist: Reece gets to explore a new character, as Lane transforms into Ian for the remainder of the series… or so it seems!
Though Lane himself is really, truly gone, Reece Ritchie — the actor who plays him — doesn’t appear to be going anywhere, and that’s definitely a huge relief. Ritchie’s distinctively different portrayal of Ian as a cast-aside clone with a survivor’s undefeated optimism has been one of the unexpected highlights of Season 2 so far… and now that Ian’s carrying the emotional weight of both the living and the dead, his story can only get more interesting from this point forward.
Ian brings a wealth of overarching understanding about the GSA, and when combined with Garnet’s recent encounters with actual EF survivors, it could potentially be the chink in the armor that has thus far maintained the GSA’s unblemished image. Keep in mind that The Ark One is a vessel belonging to the GSA, and under normal circumstances, Garnet has been acting as its de facto captain, even without an external leadership structure. However, considering this week’s groundbreaking developments, the black-and-white good vs evil narrative that has long encircled the GSA and its Eastern Federation adversary now appears to be a mere facade.
On its voyage to colonize the Trappist planet system, the Ark One’s allegiances could shift drastically – this is especially true now that Garnet has witnessed the devastating consequences of the Global Space Administration’s clone program (a program which produced individuals like Ian and Lane primarily as disposable organ donors). As an uneasy partnership emerges between the Ark One and Captain Zed’s EF faction, what lies ahead for both groups as they navigate the cosmos together, racing towards a shared, yet mysterious destination that promises to be a new beginning for mankind?
One fact is undeniable: The Ark has no qualms about delivering unexpected twists – sometimes requiring farewells from characters and locations cherished by viewers, abruptly.
