Shonda Rhimes Resigns From Kennedy Center Board As Trump Installs Himself As Leader

Shonda Rhimes resigned from the Kennedy Center Board Wednesday.

The producer of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ and head of Shondaland, who additionally held the position of treasurer at an art institution, stepped down. This move came after former President Trump announced on Truth Social that he was appointed as the chairman of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.

Deborah F. Rutter, serving as the third president of the Kennedy Center since 2014, declared her departure from the institution on Wednesday. Earlier, she had indicated that she would step down at the end of 2025. Similarly, on Wednesday, musician and advisor to the National Symphony Orchestra, Ben Folds, announced his resignation.

Following President Trump’s announcement on Friday that he intended to dismiss several board members at the Kennedy Center, including chairman David M. Rubenstein, and take over as chairman himself, a wave of resignations has been triggered.

On Monday, I enthusiastically shared on social media that I planned to appoint Richard Grenell, previously my ambassador in Germany, as the interim executive director. I expressed that he shares my vision for a resplendent era of American Arts and Culture, and I am confident he will ensure no more anti-American propaganda persists.

The Kennedy Center manages both the National Symphony Orchestra and the Washington National Opera, while also hosting plays, organizing the Kennedy Center Honors, and offering a variety of other programs.

According to a report by The New York Times, the websites of the respective centers now show that 18 board members, each appointed by President Biden, along with Rubenstein, are no longer listed as members.
