In the year 2025, television schedules will feature the 21st season of “Grey’s Anatomy“. Over time, viewers have developed a deep affection for numerous doctors, patients, and emergency responders who have graced the hospital’s doors. This affection has been so profound that it led to the success of two spin-offs. Recently, Shonda Rhimes hinted at having concepts for more “Grey’s” spin-offs, and I can’t help but wish that a specific one had made it onto our screens.
Shonda Rhimes has revealed that in addition to Kate Walsh’s “Private Practice” and the firefighter-focused “Station 19,” both available on Hulu, she’s also thought of other shows over the years to carry forward certain characters’ tales beyond the hospital. During an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Rhimes mentioned some other series ideas she had conceived.
On Grey’s, there were numerous options. I had the feeling that we could have explored Chicago Anatomy or even Boston instead. Those seemed like viable alternatives. However, the prospect of recreating the same world didn’t excite me. After much deliberation, we considered various possibilities.
It would be logical to create a spinoff set in Boston, given that many characters reside there and work at the Fox Foundation; for instance, Japril. Meredith Grey moved to Boston so her daughter could attend a specialized program. Meanwhile, we could continue following Maggie Pierce and the Heart Center team in Chicago.
In my opinion, when Scott Speedman reappeared on the show, it seemed they were planning a Minnesota-based spinoff. Additionally, David Hamilton (played by Peter Gallagher) introduced The Grey Center for Meredith’s research. I also enjoyed E.R. Fightmaster in her recurring role as Kai Bartley. However, another one of Shonda Rhimes’ spinoff concepts caught my attention the most.
I had an idea for a potential spin-off series featuring Amelia (played by Caterina Scorsone) and her sisters, who are all medical professionals. Such a show centered around the Shepherd sisters could have been quite intriguing.
It’s nothing short of genius, really. Across the seasons of “Grey’s Anatomy”, we’ve come to know Derek and Amelia Shepherd’s three sisters. Amelia, in particular, stands out as the family’s black sheep. The complex relationships within this family, coupled with their shared careers in medicine, makes for a compelling plotline. Not only that, but the talented actors who bring these characters to life are truly exceptional.
Embeth Davidtz played OB/GYN Nancy in Seasons 3 and 15; Neve Campbell portrayed Liz (a doctor too) for two episodes of Season 9; and Amy Acker appeared only once in Season 15 as psychiatrist Kathleen. To summarize, these actresses contributed to the show during various seasons, potentially shedding light on the question “Who is Lucas’ mother?” if nothing else.
Regrettably, it seems that concept, along with numerous others, never materialized. Initially, there were indications that ABC could be launching a police-oriented series to challenge NBC’s One Chicago shows, complete with medical, fire, and P.D. counterparts. However, in 2021, an ABC executive stirred up enthusiasm among fans when mentioning “the next stage of Grey’s Anatomy,” but later clarified that no new spinoff was under development.
It’s been a while since we’ve seen a spinoff from “Grey’s Anatomy”, with shows like “Station 19” and “Private Practice” being well-loved by fans. Given the success of “Grey’s” currently, I think it’s safe to say that there could be more shows set in that universe in the future. For now, catch the latest episodes of “Grey’s Anatomy” every Thursday at 10 p.m. ET on ABC, or stream them the next day on Hulu.
