Shoojit Sircar slams top Bollywood actors for charging high fees; says, ‘directors will stop…’

With debates escalating about excessive actor salaries and extravagant entourage costs in Bollywood, acclaimed director Shoojit Sircar has issued a frank and advisory statement: prominent actors need to reconsider their wage expectations or risk becoming obsolete in an industry that’s increasingly concerned with budgets. He further stated, “Directors may cease approaching them.

During an interview with ANI, director Shoojit Sircar emphasized that the primary concern in filmmaking should be nurturing creative visions instead of inflated salaries for celebrities. While he didn’t delve deeply into the subject of entourage requirements or actor compensation, it was evident from his comments that stars need to lower their fees to keep production costs manageable.

Shoojit cautioned them that if they don’t comply, directors might cease to work with them. Moreover, he underscored the importance of prioritizing a director’s creative vision over adjusting it for an actor’s payment.

The well-known filmmaker responsible for movies such as Piku, October, and Madras Cafe disclosed that he and his production partner, Ronnie Lahiri, have always operated under tight financial limitations. He elaborated that they’ve consistently managed to keep expenditures minimal, leading to fewer criticisms.

As per Shoojit, the actors working on his projects recognize that although his movies might not boast hefty budgets, they are fueled by genuine feelings and enthusiasm.

The movie maker too voiced criticism towards the industry’s creative rut, highlighting that the Bollywood industry is facing difficulties because many filmmakers are choosing to play it cautious instead of taking risks.

In his opinion, he stressed the lack of innovative thinking in terms of taking risks and pointed out that the industry should not continue repeating old narratives. Instead, regardless of the genre, it’s important to introduce fresh, intellectually stimulating concepts.

Sircar’s latest movie, titled “I Want To Talk,” featuring Abhishek Bachchan, garnered positive reviews from critics but struggled at the cinema box office. In an earlier conversation with NDTV, he confessed feeling bewildered by its cinematic reception. However, now that the film is accessible on streaming platforms, he feels it’s finding a connection with its viewers.
