In the beginning of the game Avowed, a crucial choice presents itself during the initial tutorial quest, On Strange Shores. As you explore the jail cell, you encounter Ilora, who is imprisoned. She informs you that her crew has gone insane, but she also behaves aggressively towards you, creating an immediate impression of dislike and distrust.
The question at hand is: Should she be released? This choice carries immediate and long-term effects, particularly in the game’s initial location, Dawnshore. However, since this is only the beginning, don’t expect a drastic change. The purpose of this decision is to demonstrate how your choices shape the world, so let’s explore its repercussions.
Should You Free Ilora?
As a dedicated fan, I can confirm that the initial revelation here is about Ilora being truthful, and the chaos she describes is none other than Dreamscourge – a significant aspect of our beloved game. However, just because she speaks the truth doesn’t necessarily mean we should blindly trust her. But, in this case, it seems wise to extend a helping hand to Ilora. There are indeed numerous benefits to assisting her, whereas leaving her in distress could lead to several undesirable consequences. To start with, let’s focus on the immediate effects of our actions.
If you set Ilora free, she’ll lend a hand as you navigate the island, making things slightly easier since, despite being in the tutorial, the weapons here are quite subpar. Conversely, if you decide not to free her, she’ll manage an escape and by the time you reach the ultimate battlefield, you’ll find yourself facing off against her. She might not be particularly challenging, but she does add another inconvenience when taking on Steadman Ralke, the island’s supposed ‘boss’.

Instead, what makes it more captivating is the enduring influence. In Dawnshore, you can embark on the side mission titled “Escape Plan from the Shanty Town“. Here, an elderly pair will request your assistance in exiting town discreetly. Upon completion of the initial stage where you must locate plants and a deed, you’ll be tasked with “negotiating with smugglers“. If you have previously helped Ilora, “she will join the group of smugglers“, thus enabling you to negotiate a “peaceful resolution with the smugglers“.
If you confess to having murdered Ilora, this instantaneously triggers a confrontation with the smugglers. On the other hand, if you claim she was devoured by the Dreamscourge or that you never encountered her, the smugglers will believe your story… but they won’t seek a peaceful resolution, and therefore, you’ll end up in a fight with them.
One alternative is either release Ilora, benefiting from her aid for a future mission, or forgo Ilora’s assistance, resulting in battles against her now and potentially in the next mission as well.
Where To Find The Jail Key For Ilora?
With the obvious choice being her release, let’s consider the subsequent action. Fortunately, the key required is conveniently placed nearby. Navigate up the boxes situated across from the cells until you ascend to the next level. From this point, proceed through the damaged wall and make a right turn. You will encounter a wooden floor surface. Puncture it, and you’ll descend into a room containing the key.
1. First, reach for the item on the wall.
2. Then, unlock the door and proceed out of the room.
3. This will guide you back to the room containing the cells.
4. Interact with Ilora’s cell door, and she’ll gain her freedom.
5. Additionally, open the cell next to hers, and find a way to crawl through the wall to locate the Deerskin Gloves.
