Shrek Animatronic Roasts New Movie Design

Initial reactions to the trailer for Shrek 5, unveiled a few days ago, have been varied, to put it mildly, on the internet. Many viewers expressed dissatisfaction with the new character designs for both Shrek and his companions. This debate seems to be heating up within social media circles related to movies, and it appears that even Universal Orlando is getting involved. A widely-shared video shows an animatronic Donkey at the park taking a jab at the movie, and fans are expressing their amusing opinions on the matter.

2024 summer marked the grand opening of DreamWorks Land at Universal Orlando, and I was there, front and center! Among the many delightful experiences, I got to hang with some beloved characters, like Donkey. This animatronic mule is a real charmer, cracking jokes just like his Eddie Murphy-voiced counterpart from the Shrek series. But here’s something unexpected: it seemed to be taking a few jabs at the early footage of the fifth movie! Catch the hilarious moment for yourself by checking out the TikTok video shared by @epicfamilyquests.

Funny enough, I can’t decide if it’s more surprising or amusing – is it the audacity of the comments themselves or the Princess Fiona actress trying to stay impartial? Given that Universal Pictures (in partnership with DreamWorks) actually owns this franchise, it’s quite intriguing! Yet, it fits the meta style of the series, and fans are certainly engaged, sharing their opinions not just about the comments but also the animation as well.

  • You know it’s bad when the animatronic controller mascot of the Shrek characters are bashing the movie. – Preston fabrizio
  • ‘donkey looks homeless’ is too real 😂 – Blue_Dragon
  • Even the animatronic looks more accurate – Timmy_burch
  • Fiona was fighting for her job LOL!! – miffysmama
  • So you’re telling me they can make the animatronic accurate but not the animation? 💀 – BeautifullyBrokenMe
  • I’m actually kinda surprised that it’s a person behind the talking animatronic 😅😅😅 – Joseph_V19

It’s fascinating to ponder over how an incident like this takes place at a Universal-themed park. At the same time, it’s hard not to find humor in its strange nature. What it seems to highlight, though, is the intense enthusiasm surrounding the alterations in animation design for the eagerly anticipated Shrek 5. To be honest, I must admit that some of the participants expressing their opinions have caught me off guard.

In response to criticism about Sonic’s redesign, the team behind “Sonic the Hedgehog” released a light-hearted video acknowledging the adjustments made to the character’s appearance in the past. When the initial trailer was unveiled years ago, fans were shocked by Sonic’s new look, causing the release date to be delayed so that changes could be made. In the end, they created a character design that closely resembled his video game version.

Regarding the Shrek 5 predicament, one enthusiastic viewer decided to take action by trying to enhance the animation independently. The outcome was positively received on social media platforms. In essence, it appears that die-hard fans would rather see the characters resemble how they looked in the initial four movies, which were released in theaters between 2001 and 2010.

It’s unclear how the team behind the movie might react to the reviews, but it’s essential to stand firm with creative decisions. As of now, we’ve only glimpsed a piece of Shrek 5, so fans may still have reservations. However, I must confess that even I would need a moment to consider harsh feedback from an automated character voiced by one of our park’s cast members (operated by the studio I am associated with). We will get a chance to watch the movie in its entirety when it hits theaters on December 23, 2026.
