‘Shrinking’s Bill Lawrence Says “This Story Is Over,” But Teases Its Future

As a seasoned television enthusiast with decades of binge-watching under my belt, I must say that Bill Lawrence has truly cemented his place as the reigning king of TV comedy. His latest creation, “Shrinking,” is no exception, and I eagerly await its third season on AppleTV+.

Lawrence’s candid interview with the Los Angeles Times left me intrigued about the potential future of this hilarious series. While he hinted that the show may be wrapping up after three seasons, I can’t help but wonder if he’s ready to say goodbye to the world he’s so lovingly crafted. After all, who among us wouldn’t want more Jason Segel, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Michael Urie, and the legendary Harrison Ford?

One can only hope that AppleTV+ will be as enamored with “Shrinking” as its fans are and continue to fund additional seasons. If the talented writers can weave in a fresh narrative while maintaining the chemistry that makes this show so enjoyable, I’m confident that it will continue to thrive.

In fact, if they decide to focus on Alice (Lukita Maxwell) and her college adventures, perhaps they could even collaborate with Mindy Kaling for a crossover event! Now that would be something to laugh about!

As a dedicated cinephile, I must confess that Bill Lawrence, the co-creator and showrunner of “Shrinking,” is currently ruling the TV comedy realm. With the third season of the captivating AppleTV+ series starring Harrison Ford and Jason Segel in the works, not to mention the fourth installment of “Ted Lasso,” a revival of the beloved “Scrubs,” and an upcoming Steve Carell-led comedy on the horizon, it’s no surprise that he’s considering wrapping up “Shrinking” with its upcoming third season. Yet, there remains a lingering question in my mind: is he truly prepared to bid farewell to this remarkable show?

In a recent chat with the Los Angeles Times, Lawrence discussed frankly the possibilities for the future of Shrinking, given that it was originally conceived as a series lasting three seasons. When directly asked if he could envision the show continuing past this initial pitch or not, the showrunner replied ambiguously: “Yes and no.

Will ‘Shrinking’ Get Renewed For A Fourth Season (Or More)?

Without a doubt, Lawrence didn’t just say “yes” or “no” in his response. Instead, he elaborated that he believes the story will conclude within three seasons. If we were to start the fourth season with Jason Segel saying, “I’m still so sad about my wife dying, and I really messed up with my daughter,” people might express a look of deep distress.

Further elaborating, the writers found it thrilling and energizing to ponder the series’ progression beyond Jason Segel’s (Jimmy) first introduction, as they’re currently immersed in writing for season three, according to Lawrence.

In the writers’ room for Season 3, we’re adding little hidden surprises (Easter eggs) hinting at the plot for Season 4. A great aspect of streaming is having the opportunity to create a three-part story with a clear beginning, middle, and end. If viewers enjoy these characters, there are many more stories waiting to be told.

The show Shrinking might shift its attention from Segel’s issues towards one of the numerous gifted performers in the extensive cast, while maintaining the show’s overall dynamic and chemistry. With stars like Jessica Williams (Gaby), Christa Miller (Liz), and Michael Urie (Brian) apparently going through significant life transitions – not to mention the Harrison Ford-like presence – the series could effortlessly revolve around any of these actors and still thrive.

Well, you know what? Including Jimmy’s daughter Alice (played by Lukita Maxwell) and her college journey could potentially add some intriguing plot twists to the upcoming season. However, it might seem like a different show altogether if it were to solely center on her. To be fair, Mindy Kaling has already created “The Sex Life of College Girls,” which is quite good as it stands.

Fortunately, it appears that the third season of the series may provide us with hints about its future direction – a direction that AppleTV+ seems likely to embrace, provided that Lawrence’s magic continues to be part of the mix.
