Despite numerous Dracula films and many others featuring Van Helsing in the past, director Natasha Kermani‘s Abraham’s Boys stands out as something truly distinctive. This film, adapted from Joe Hill’s short story, has been acquired for distribution by RLJE Films and Shudder. The horror movie will debut this weekend at the Overlook Film Festival in New Orleans, and it’s causing quite a stir due to its innovative concept.
According to Bloody Disgusting, RLJE and Shudder have obtained distribution rights for the movie titled “Abraham’s Boys“, which is a sequel to Bram Stoker’s classic novel, “Dracula“. Originally published in the 2004 anthology “The Many Faces of Van Helsing“, this story was later included in Hill’s collection of short stories, “20th Century Ghosts“, released in 2005. Instead of focusing on the impact of Dracula-related events on the renowned vampire hunter, the narrative delves into the point of view of his offspring.
Max and Rudy Van Helsing have lived under the strict and overly protective rule of their father, Abraham, all their lives. They don’t know about his shadowy past, which makes it hard for them to make sense of his growing unease and odd actions. However, as they start piecing together their dad’s connection to Dracula, they find themselves in a world that falls apart, compelling them to face the chilling legacy they were never supposed to claim.
Mark Ward, RLJE Films’ Chief Acquisitions Officer, can hardly contain his excitement about introducing “Abraham’s Boys” to the public and extending the “Dracula” lore with an innovative and captivating approach. Director Natasha Kermani has skillfully crafted a suspenseful tale centered around characters in the horror genre, pulling Van Helsing’s history into the open, whether his sons are prepared for it or not. Notably, Kermani’s previous works include directing the segment “TKNOGD” in the anthology film “V/H/S/85,” and the 2020 horror movie “Lucky,” which has earned high praise with a 93% rating on Rotten Tomatoes from critics.
‘Abraham’s Boys’ Stars a ‘Bosch’ Favorite
Currently, there’s no specified release date for the movie “Abraham’s Boys”. It’s undetermined whether it will first appear in cinemas or premiere on Shudder for streaming. However, we can confirm that Titus Welliver, famously known for his role as Detective Harry Bosch in the Amazon Prime Video series “Bosch”, stars in this film. Other notable actors include Jocelin Donahue (“The House of the Devil”), Judah Mackey (“The Young And The Restless”), Aurora Perrineau (“Westworld”), and Brady Hepner (“The Black Phone”).
In a statement, Kermani expressed delight about adapting Joe Hill’s eerie tale for the big screen in California, working with an exceptional team from Los Angeles. She is thrilled to unveil the film globally, joining hands with her partners at RLJE Films and Shudder.
Shudder and RLJE Films have a rich history collaborating, with them jointly producing popular films such as “Suitable Flesh,” the Nicolas Cage movie “Arcadian,” and the horror-comedy slasher film “Bloody Axe Wound.” The latter was recently premiered on their streaming service a couple of weeks ago. Stay tuned for updates on “Abraham’s Boys,” including release date and trailer, as more information becomes available.
