Siam Discovery in Bangkok has once more pioneered the field of retail and cultural interaction by successfully launching Future Lab Volume 4: Design Culture. This innovative shared creation area was designed to reinvent the blend of art, city identity, and personalization tailored to the individual, providing a unique experience that seamlessly combined the city’s artistic legacy with modern design elements.
From its beginning, Future Lab has been displaying sneaker culture (in its first volume), customization for surf and skate (in the second volume), and retail experiences centered around the metaverse (in the third volume). Interestingly, Volume 4 deviated from the norm by teaming up with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration to unveil an installation that showcased Bangkok City’s corporate identity.
The key feature of the project was the impressive 2.4 x 10-meter “BKK” typography sculpture, strategically located at Pathumwan Skywalk – one of Bangkok’s most bustling pedestrian paths. Designed to mirror the city’s vibrant urban culture, this iconic structure harmoniously combined tradition and contemporary design, paying tribute to the Sao Ching Cha font, a typographic representation of Thai Naree script.
As a gamer, stepping into Future Lab Volume 4 felt like diving headfirst into a level where creativity was the currency. Collaborating with local brands Yuedpao and ODS, they let us script our own chapter in Bangkok’s story. We got to customize unique t-shirts and badges adorned with iconic fonts that screamed Bangkok. These limited edition souvenirs turned Bangkok’s visual narrative into wearable masterpieces, pushing the boundaries of modern Thai design even further.
Governor Chadchart Sittipunt underlined the importance of the installation, pointing out that approximately 100,000 pedestrians use the Pathumwan Skywalk every day, making this project an essential symbol of culture. On the other hand, Salawit Suviporn and Tonongsak Saeiaw from Siam Piwat emphasized their dedication to innovation, maintaining that Future Lab continues to be a vibrant platform for creative collaboration and cutting-edge experiences.
As I stepped into Future Lab Volume 4 during its activation, I was blown away by the crowd of over 50,000 fellow gamers who flocked to this experiential space to design their own unique garments. Now that the latest volume has wrapped up, we’re eagerly anticipating what innovative ideas Future Lab will bring next.
