Siena Agudong Takes on Sue Snell in Mike Flanagan’s ‘Carrie’ Series

Following the news that Summer H. Howell landed the lead role in Mike Flanagan’s Carrie reboot series on Prime Video, it appears that they have also cast Sue Snell. The role of Carrie White’s friend-turned-nemesis will be played by Siena Agudong, who is known for her work in Resident Evil and the 2022 Netflix movie The 4:30 Movie. Additionally, she made a brief appearance in Fast & Furious 9 as a young Mia Toretto.

According to Variety, Agudong has joined the cast to play Snell in the upcoming TV series adaptation of ‘Carrie’, which was initially announced for development in October 2024 with Flanagan as director. Flanagan is well-versed in King’s works, having previously directed adaptations such as ‘Doctor Sleep’, ‘Gerald’s Game’, and ‘The Life of Chuck’ (due for release this year). This new version of ‘Carrie’ will mark the fourth time the story has been brought to the screen (excluding ‘The Rage: Carrie 2’ and two stage plays), and is anticipated to be a modern and relevant retelling of the classic novel.

“Carrie White, an outcast at high school due to her sheltered upbringing under her overbearing mother, experiences a dramatic shift when her father passes away unexpectedly. Now attending public school for the first time, Carrie must navigate the complexities of social life while dealing with a bullying incident that rocks her community and the emergence of extraordinary psychokinetic abilities.

At only 20 years old, Agudong boasts an impressive resume, with roles that stretch back to her early beginnings in the entertainment industry. In fact, she made her debut at just 8 years old, landing a recurring part in the ABC crime drama “Killer Women,” a performance that earned her a nomination for the Young Artist Award. Following this success, she went on to appear in the Nickelodeon series’ “Nicky, Ricky, Dicky & Dawn” and “Star Falls,” as well as numerous other TV shows such as “Teachers” and “Hawaii Five-0.”

Mike Flanagan Says ‘Carrie’ Will Make “Substantial Changes” From the Novel

1974 saw King’s novel make its debut. In 1976, it was transformed into a movie by renowned director Brian De Palma, featuring Sissy Spacek and Piper Laurie who were both Academy Award nominees. As time has moved on, the story seems somewhat outdated in terms of its backdrop; however, its underlying themes continue to resonate universally. In an interview with MovieWeb last year, Flanagan initially hesitated about taking on the project, but once he contemplated what unique elements he could bring to it, his enthusiasm grew.

The tale of Carrie White resonates strongly with contemporary issues concerning high school violence and bullying, regrettably, its relevance seems more piercingly applicable than when it was originally penned. This offers an opportunity for genuine updating, not just by altering the time period, but also to discuss the challenges that today’s American high school students face.

Watching Carrie White pass through a metal detector captures my attention,” he went on. “Imagine that scene in the locker room, now with everyone glued to their phones… It’s a whole new perspective! To preserve the story’s essence, we made significant alterations, but I can’t reveal all the twists just yet.
