As a seasoned Star Wars enthusiast who has witnessed the highs and lows of this iconic franchise for over four decades, I must confess that the latest news about Simon Kinberg spearheading a new trilogy leaves me both intrigued and apprehensive.
As a die-hard movie enthusiast, I’ve always believed that who you know in Tinseltown can give you an edge, and it seems that’s part of the reason why I’ve been tapped to orchestrate a fresh Star Wars trilogy, as suggested by a recent report. Last week, fans were taken aback when the unofficial word spread that a new trilogy is in development at Disney and Lucasfilm. Having penned and produced critically-acclaimed movies like Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Logan, The Martian, and X-Men: Days of Future Past, as well as forgettable flops like the 2015 Fantastic Four and X-Men: Dark Phoenix, I’ll be steering Episodes 10-12.
As per Variety’s recent report, Simon Kinberg secured his role in the upcoming Star Wars trilogy due to his long-standing association with the Star Wars IP. This was facilitated by executives Dave Filoni and Carrie Beck. Interestingly, Kinberg had previously served as a writer and executive producer on the highly praised “Star Wars: Rebels” series. However, it was Kathleen Kennedy, Lucasfilm’s president, who is said to have recruited Kinberg for this position.
It’s not just fans who are skeptical of Simon Kinberg’s involvement, as the writer/producer is rumored to be “a considerably risky bet” by insiders, mainly due to his involvement with Dark Phoenix (as a writer and producer) and The New Mutants (as a producer). The report also suggested that Kinberg’s Star Wars trilogy was a closely held secret at Disney, and was nowhere near ready to be announced to the public. Per the report:
The project is currently undergoing significant internal advancements and isn’t close to being revealed to the public yet.
Will Simon Kinberg’s Star Wars Trilogy Continue the Skywalker Saga?
As a die-hard Star Wars fan, I can’t help but notice the intense debates this iconic sci-fi series stirs up – “There’s no one more critical of Star Wars than its fans themselves.” While some fans are vehemently against Disney’s new direction for the franchise and refuse to accept a fresh trilogy, there’s a hopeful contingent among us who can hardly wait to see what Simon Kinberg has in store. Though whispers and speculation portray Kinberg as the mastermind behind this upcoming trilogy, opinions diverge on the storyline. Some suspect that the fourth trilogy might continue the Skywalker Saga, focusing on characters whose stories have lost some of their luster for me. In contrast, other reports hint that Kinberg’s films will center around an entirely new cast of characters.
As per the recent update from Varity, it seems that even Simon Kinberg himself is uncertain about the direction. At this moment, the scripts are at their most preliminary stage, and both Disney, Lucasfilm, and Kinberg are pondering over the ideal approach to take. To quote the report directly:
As a passionate fan, I can’t help but share some exciting news I’ve heard from inside the studio. Contrary to what some media reports suggest, Kinberg’s Star Wars movies aren’t fully developed yet. They’re still in their early stages, so we should all buckle up for an incredible journey as we wait to see how these films unfold the Skywalker Saga, supposedly as Episodes X, XI, and XII.
Although Luke, Leia, and Anakin/Darth Vader Skywalker are undeniably popular characters who have starred in nine films, it may be beneficial for the franchise to explore new protagonists from among the Jedi, Sith, or even Gray Jedi. After all, the Star Wars universe is vast and continually evolving, so it seems logical to broaden our focus beyond a single group of individuals.
