As a huge fan of Star Trek and someone who has followed the franchise’s developments closely over the years, I can’t help but feel a mix of excitement and sadness when it comes to the potential of another Star Trek movie. On one hand, I’m thrilled that there are so many great shows currently available on Paramount+ that continue to expand the Star Trek universe in fresh and innovative ways. Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy have all been impressive additions to the franchise.
If you’re a Paramount+ subscriber, you’ve had uninterrupted access to the Star Trek universe since 2017, with popular series like Discovery, Picard, Strange New Worlds, Lower Decks, and Prodigy adding fresh excitement. However, it’s been eight years since Star Trek Beyond hit theaters, and progress on Star Trek 4 has come to a standstill. Although Simon Pegg, who portrays Scotty in the Kelvin Timeline, is eager to rejoin the cast for the next Star Trek installment, he acknowledged that its production may be marred due to a particular reason.
On June 19, 2016, a mournful month before the broad release of “Star Trek Beyond,” Anton Yelchin, the actor portraying Pavel Chekov in these films, passed away at the young age of 27. Therefore, whether Chekov is recast or his character is retired, Pegg shared with Katee Sackhoff on “The Sackhoff Show” that it would be disheartening for him and the other main actors to work on “Star Trek 4” without their late colleague. However, Pegg expressed his readiness to return despite this sadness.
If given the chance, I’m eager to participate once more. Our previous experience, marked by the loss of Anton, has left a deep impact on us all. The pain was felt not only by us but also by the world at large. Should we have another opportunity to reunite, I would gladly seize it. As mentioned earlier, these are men I hold in high regard and don’t get to spend much time with. It would be a joy to reconnect with them.
Simon Pegg’s connection with Anton Yelchin went way back to November 2007 when production for the initial Star Trek film started. With the need to introduce new versions of the USS Enterprise’s crew, Chekov was a must-have character. Impressive performances in films like Along Came a Spider and Charlie Bartlett earned Yelchin the role. Returning for Star Trek 4 would undeniably bring a sense of melancholy, but Pegg looked forward to rejoining Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto, Karl Urban, Zoe Saldaña, and John Cho once more.
After nearly a decade since the release of “Star Trek Beyond,” the future of “Star Trek 4” remains uncertain for me as a fan. On one hand, reports emerged in March that Steve Yockey from “The Flight Attendant” was penning the script for what could potentially be the conclusion of this iconic saga. However, in May, Chris Pine expressed surprise over this news and remains unclear about the current status of the project.
As a long-time devoted fan of the Star Trek universe, I can’t help but feel both excited and perplexed by the latest developments in the franchise. In January, we received news that a new Star Trek project was in the works, with vague details about its origins. Fast forward to May, when official confirmation rolled in: Toby Haynes, director of Andor, and Seth Grahame-Smith, writer of Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter, were attached to this new feature.
It’s likely that Paramount Pictures will share some new information about “Star Trek 4” soon. In the meantime, fans have several new “Star Trek” series to anticipate. Notably, Simon Pegg stars as Hugh Campbell Sr. in “The Boys,” which is accessible with an Amazon Prime Video membership.
