Sinners: 2025’s Oscar Contender with a Chance to Make History

As I eagerly look forward to the Oscars 2026, it seems that “Sinners” might be among the front-runners for this year’s awards. It’s hard to forget how “Anora” captured the Best Picture award at the Oscars 2025, marking the end of last year’s awards season. Now, anticipation is growing as we approach the 98th Academy Awards. The buzz has been particularly strong lately with early-year film festivals like Cannes unveiling their lineups and more films setting their release dates in the fall – a traditional period for Oscar contenders to make their debut.

The film “Sinners” was released on April 18 and is now being talked about as a potential contender for the Oscars. Initially, it wasn’t one of my early predictions for the Best Picture nominees at the Oscars 2026, but given that it’s directed by Ryan Coogler, there was always a possibility it would receive recognition. With rave reviews and box office success, “Sinners” has become one of the standout films of 2025. This has sparked conversations about its chances at the Oscars, although the 98th Academy Awards are not until March 15, 2026, leaving more than ten months for speculation.

Sinners Has The Support Necessary To Be An Oscar Contender

Hollywood & Audiences Are Embracing The Movie

It’s quite plausible that the film “Sinners” could be a strong contender for an Oscar next year. Usually, a movie needs to garner some mix of positive critical acclaim, significant studio support for a major promotional effort, recognition from Hollywood creatives, and overall success. Remarkably, “Sinners” satisfies each of these requirements.

As a film enthusiast, I am thrilled to say that “Sinners” is off to a stellar start with its impressive 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of the most acclaimed films this year. While critics’ endorsements may not directly influence Oscar voting, they can certainly bolster its case. With such recognition from various critics’ groups, “Sinners” has positioned itself strongly in the race for nominations and wins. The rest of the year may bring forth more outstanding films, but I find it hard to imagine that “Sinners” will be overlooked during awards season.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that as a Warner Bros. production, “Sinners” is another potential Oscar contender this year. The studio has a strong history of putting at least one of their films in the running for the Best Picture award every year. With such a competitive lineup, it remains to be seen whether “Sinners” or Paul Thomas Anderson’s “One Battle After Another” will receive more support from Warner Bros. for the upcoming awards season.

The fact that Ryan Coogler, a highly acclaimed filmmaker with an Academy Award-worthy movie like ‘Black Panther’ under his belt, has gained significant popularity in the industry, will undoubtedly boost the chances of “Sinners” during Oscar voting. This is because his ability to create a powerful and meaningful blockbuster while offering a unique narrative is something that many peers in Hollywood will want to recognize.

To wrap it up, the significant box office success of “Sinners” should further strengthen its argument for recognition. It’s possible that this film could be among the top choices on ballots, given its broad popularity. Having “Sinners” as a major contender for the Oscars could provide an opportunity to incorporate at least one movie that resonates with the general public into the ceremony. Although this isn’t the sole reason why the film should receive Oscar nominations, if “Sinners” is multi-nominated, it would be advantageous to have directors like Coogler, Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, and others at the 98th Academy Awards, as it could boost viewership.

Horror Movies Aren’t Typically Oscar Contenders

While there’s considerable anticipation surrounding the film Sinners as a potential Oscar contender across several categories, there are some factors that might pose challenges. One significant concern is its release date. Historically, studios tend to delay releasing their award-worthy films towards the end of the year, allowing them to remain relevant during the peak awards season. For instance, in the last year’s lineup, only Dune: Part Two – released before summer – managed to secure a Best Picture nomination.

Here’s some good news for those often labeled as “Sinners”: There’s a pattern with the Oscars where at least one movie released earlier in the year can make it big in the Best Picture category. For instance, in 2024, films like “Oppenheimer,” “Barbie,” and “Past Lives” were nominated despite their July releases being after the previous year. In 2023, we had “Everything Everywhere All At Once” in March and “Top Gun: Maverick” in May. The same goes for 2022 with “Dune” from March, and even as far back as 2020 when “Once Upon A Time In Hollywood” was released in July. Going further back to 2019, “Black Panther” earned a nomination after its February release. Currently, no early-year release seems likely to outshine “Sinners” as the 2026 example of this trend.

Another factor worth considering is the genre of “Sinners,” namely its classification as a horror movie. Although it doesn’t conform to typical horror film conventions because of its unique blend with music, historically, the Oscars have been less inclined to acknowledge horror films compared to welcoming them. Interestingly, The Substance’s Best Picture nomination during the last ceremony was only the seventh instance of a horror film being recognized in this category. However, this nomination also demonstrates that the Academy is open to nominating horror movies when they garner sufficient popularity and critical acclaim, which “Sinners” appears to have achieved as well.

In my view, the horror genre classification of “Sinners” should not limit its chances at the Oscars. Previous examples like “The Substance” and “Nosferatu,” which were also nominated in multiple categories, demonstrate that horror films can showcase other exceptional aspects of filmmaking. Instead of focusing solely on the scariest scenes or best jump scares, the deeper themes explored by Coogler in “Sinners” can strike a chord with voters and move conversations beyond just the genre.

What Categories Sinners Could Receive Oscar Nominations In

Several Nominations Are Likely

It seems highly likely that the film “Sinners” will receive several Oscar nominations next year, given its impressive technical aspects. The Academy should take note of Ludwig Göransson’s powerful score, as well as the original songs he composed for the movie’s soundtrack. The sound design is also exceptionally well-executed. Furthermore, Ruth E. Carter’s costume design and Hannah Bechler’s production design significantly enhance the authenticity of the world depicted in the film. The cinematography by Autumn Durald Arkapaw and Michael P. Shawver’s editing are equally noteworthy, and could potentially be recognized if a Best Picture nomination is warranted.

Discussions about potential nominations become more intriguing when considering both Coogler and the cast. There’s a strong argument that Coogler deserves recognition in both Best Original Screenplay and Best Director categories. Jordan, with his exceptional dual role performance, might garner attention for Best Actor. Steinfeld, a past Oscar nominee, also delivers an impressive performance. However, I feel that those specific nominations may be less probable. Instead, Delroy Lindo seems to have a good chance in the Best Supporting Actor category.

I believe “Sinners” could be one of the early contenders for the newly introduced Best Casting category, showcasing not only Coogler’s work but also that of casting director Francine Maisler and the entire ensemble.

As a fervent admirer, the prospect of Sinners securing a Best Picture nomination seems quite promising. I can visualize a scenario where it garners nominations comparable to those earned by Black Panther, such as Best Picture, Costume Design, Production Design, Sound, Original Score, and Original Song. Furthermore, with a nod for Best Casting, receiving seven Oscar nominations for Sinners seems like a reasonable expectation. However, I must admit that I wouldn’t be surprised if it manages to secure even more nominations, possibly nearing 10 or more, given Coogler’s exceptional directing and writing talents, as well as other technical accomplishments.

Will Sinners Win Best Picture At The 2026 Oscars?

It Would Be A Historic Win

2026’s Best Picture Oscar race is likely to change significantly in the coming 10 months, making it premature to definitively predict whether Sinners will claim the top prize or not. It might embody this year’s breakout hit like Everything Everywhere All At Once, a creatively fresh, entertaining film with universal themes that resonate deeply with audiences. On the other hand, it could resemble Black Panther, a popular genre blockbuster that gets overshadowed by a lesser-known, unconventional film that ultimately takes home the Oscar.

Should “Sinners” emerge victorious in the Best Picture category, it would mark a groundbreaking achievement. To date, only two other films directed by Black filmmakers have taken home this prestigious award – namely, “12 Years a Slave” and “Moonlight“. If successful, “Sinners” would also join an exclusive club of movies featuring a predominantly Black cast to win. Moreover, it would be only the second horror movie ever to receive this honor, following in the footsteps of “The Silence of the Lambs“. These historical aspects could serve as additional motivations for voters to support “Sinners” in its quest for Best Picture, but they also underscore the remarkable nature of such an achievement.
