With cinemas taking half of ticket sales and marketing expenses not included in production budgets, films typically need to recoup about 2.5 times their budget just to break even at the box office. Given this, the film might need to earn approximately $225 million to meet its financial goals, a figure that could prove challenging for Sinners, especially following a record-breaking opening weekend.
For Sinners to reach the break-even point, it must earn five times its initial global box office earnings by the end of its run. This is an extremely unlikely scenario for any movie, especially an R-rated horror film. Yet, out of the eight R-rated horror movies that had larger opening weekends domestically, six went on to gross over $225 million in total.
