Sir Ian McKellen Is Open To Returning as Gandalf, But Warns Filmmakers "They Better Be Quick"

As a lifelong fan of Middle Earth and its enchanting tales, I can hardly contain my excitement at the prospect of Sir Ian McKellen returning as Gandalf in the upcoming film, “The Hunt for Gollum.” The thought of seeing him don his pointy hat and beard once more is nothing short of magical.

As a die-hard fan, I can’t help but get excited about the possibility of Sir Ian McKellen stepping back into the mantle of Gandalf once more in the forthcoming movie, “The Hunt for Gollum.”

In a recent conversation with BBC, the esteemed actor voiced his fervent wish to reprise the role of the wizard. He declared, “I intend to prevent anyone else from donning the pointy hat and beard if possible,” also mentioning in an earlier interview with The Big Issue that his passion for J.R.R. Tolkien’s work continues to burn brightly. Regarding The Hunt for Gollum, Sir McKellen remarked, “I can’t reveal any more than that. I’ve merely been informed that there will be additional films and Gandalf will feature in them, and they are hoping I’ll portray him.”

He added, “As for when it happens, I’m not sure. The storyline hasn’t been set in stone. Therefore, they need to act swiftly.”

Sir McKellen is temporarily stepping away from acting to heal from an incident on stage at the West End, where he sustained a broken wrist and fractured vertebrae. Despite this setback, he wants his fans to know that he will carry on acting as long as his legs, lungs, and mind remain in good working condition.

Earlier in May, it was revealed that “The Hunt for Gollum” is in production, with Andy Serkis stepping into the director’s chair and Peter Jackson serving as a producer. This upcoming movie will hit theaters in 2026.
