Recently, Veer Pahariya made a nationwide impact with his first film, Sky Force. In this action-packed drama, he portrays T. Krishna Vijaya (Tabby), a character modeled after war hero Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya. We’ll delve into the life and story of this Maha Vir Chakra recipient, whose legacy continues to motivate countless young people. Let’s explore!
Following the debut of Sky Force, there was widespread curiosity about Squadron Leader Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya and his biography. For those unaware, he played a significant role during the 1965 India-Pakistan War. Enlisted in the Indian Air Force (IAF) as an aviator, he served as an instructor at the Air Force Flying College.
During the 1965 war, although he was ready but not actively engaged, he took part in an aerial skirmish with his Mystère IVa fighter-bomber. In the battle over Sargodha, he encountered a Pakistani pilot who inflicted damage on his plane. Remarkably, this Indian Air Force officer managed to bring down the Pakistani F-104 Starfighter despite being intercepted. Tragically, both he and Devayya’s Mystère were lost in the ensuing combat. It was presumed that our pilot perished in the neighboring nation.
In 1988, twenty-three years after his heroic actions, Ajjamada Boppayya Devayya was the sole Indian Air Force officer to receive the Maha Vir Chakra posthumously. His wife, Mrs. Sundari Devayya, accepted the honor on his behalf. Interestingly, Sara Ali Khan portrays Geeta Vijaya in a film, inspired by Mrs. Devayya’s life. Later, it was disclosed that Pakistani villagers discovered Devayya’s remains, not far from Sargodha, and buried him there.
As a die-hard fan, I couldn’t contain my excitement before the film release. I was fortunate enough to meet Devayya’s beloved family, listening to heart-stirring tales of his valor from his wife and daughter. On Instagram, I poured out the intense emotions I experienced during this encounter with the legendary war hero’s kin.
Today, I had the privilege of encountering Mrs. Sundari Devayya, the venerable spouse of the esteemed Mahavir Chakra awardee, Squadron Leader Ajjamada B. Devayya, along with their daughters, Smitha and Preetha, in Bengaluru. The emotions I experienced are challenging to articulate in words.
For the last three and a half years, he immersed himself deeply in studying the life and bravery of this exceptional individual, all while readying himself for portraying Tabby in Sky Force.
