Smallville Animated Sequel Series Update Has Me Feeling Bummed

After more than two decades since its initial release, “Smallville” remains cherished and boasts a dedicated fanbase. The intensity of this affection continues to fuel hopes that the Superman prequel series might resume in some capacity. For quite a while, two main actors from the show, Tom Welling and Michael Rosenbaum, along with the original producers, have been trying to initiate an animated revival series. Details about the project have been scarce, but recent developments have left me disheartened.

Since 2022, Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling have been hosting the “Talkville” rewatch podcast together. They often invite special guests, with their latest episode on YouTube featuring a phone call with producer Alfred Gough. The conversation veered towards the prospect of an animated series. Gough appears keen on becoming involved if the project ever comes to fruition; however, it seems that shifts at Warner Bros. are delaying its progress.

As far as I’m concerned, one of the main challenges many projects face during their development stage, whether at studios or networks, is the constant change in leadership, or regime shifts. Warner Bros., with its rich history and numerous transitions, has certainly experienced this. Regrettably, their decision to reboot Superman once more appears to have delayed our project temporarily.

Currently, DC Studios is indeed developing a new project centered around Superman. The narrative universe created by James Gunn for DCU is progressing, and the initial film in this series, titled “Superman,” is set to premiere in theaters this July. Although it’s an exciting development, it might be a little disappointing as it seems to potentially rule out any immediate follow-up to Smallville, given that it appears Warner Bros. might not want a specific property being handled in multiple mediums at once. Previously, it was reported that such considerations played a role in the cancellation of The CW’s Superman & Lois, although cast member Elizabeth Tulloch suggested that the decision went beyond just James Gunn’s plans.

It seems unlikely that fans will see Michael Rosenbaum and Tom Welling return to their roles in the immediate timeframe. However, given the dynamic nature of today’s media world, it’s important to remember that anything is possible. Later in a discussion with his long-term collaborators, Alfred Gough hinted at this very possibility.

It’s interesting to note that just as things tend to recur in various shapes, it appears that Buffy is making a comeback on Hulu.

The series Smallville, initially airing on The WB in 2001 and spanning an impressive 10 seasons, has proven to be quite enduring. Post its conclusion, the narrative thread persisted via the Season 11 comic book series. Moreover, in 2020, Tom Welling reprised his role as Clark Kent for the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, uniting the different Arrowverse shows. To me, Welling was the epitome of Clark, while Michael Rosenbaum embodied Lex Luthor for many viewers.
