As a dedicated horror enthusiast who has witnessed the evolution of the genre over the past few decades, I can confidently say that the “Smile” franchise has quickly become one of my favorite horror franchises. The unique blend of psychological horror and supernatural elements in these films has left me on the edge of my seat, and I eagerly await the release of “Smile 3.
Following the impressive performance of this year’s top horror movie, “Smile 2”, Paramount Pictures has chosen to prolong the chilling tale, reportedly giving the go-ahead for a third installment in the series, tentatively named “Smile 3“. This might change once a creative mind in the marketing team suggests Smil3, prompting Google to adjust its algorithm again. According to World of Reel and Production Weekly, this project is included in their 2025 production catalog, which could be an indication that Paramount Pictures plans to extend the franchise. The original “Smile”, released in 2022, was a box office sensation, earning over $217 million against a production budget of just $17 million. The sequel aimed to build on the success of one of the year’s most innovative films, and it certainly achieved that goal.
This year’s “Smile 2” earned significantly less at the box office (with an estimated budget of $28 million and, to date, it has brought in only $137 million), but both films have maintained an impressive 80% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, suggesting that critics were captivated by the chilling smiles. Will “Smile 3” continue this trend? Given its predecessors’ success, it seems plausible.
In the movie “Smile 2”, renowned pop star Skye Riley encounters a mysterious entity after witnessing her old classmate Lewis take his life in a shocking manner. As she prepares to embark on a new chapter of her career following a tragic accident that claimed her boyfriend’s life, Skye starts experiencing unsettling visions – people giving her eerie smiles – and gradually loses grip on her sense of reality. What she is unaware of is that these disturbing events will persist until her very life ends.
‘Smile’ is Officially a Horror Franchise
Despite initial doubts about the potential of a sequel for the Smile series, the release of Smile 2 left audiences amazed. The film’s protagonist, Skye Riley, offered a complex portrayal that made her an ideal victim for the malignant entity. Skye Riley stood out as a more compelling “final girl” due to her questionable reliability and influential status, which provided the malevolent force with ample opportunities for exploitation. As the movie concluded, it was suggested that Riley’s final concert may have served as the ideal conduit for the sinister grinning demon to take over the world by possessing one teenager after another.
In most horror franchises, they thrive on a compelling concept, a formidable antagonist, and strong protagonists. Unlike many others, the movie “Smile” doesn’t feature a classic slasher villain like Freddy, Michael or Jason. However, it might possess something far more significant that sets it apart and makes its characters intriguing: what if the antagonist is actually the victim? This concept opens up numerous possibilities for “Smile” to explore further in books, television series, or additional sequels. This idea is not just a temporary phenomenon; it’s a persistent force, and it won’t cease with the 2025 release of “Smile 3”.
As a cinephile, I’m thrilled to share that Director Parker Finn, who has masterfully crafted both the sequel to Smile and is slated to continue his journey for the third installment, will be diving into the remake of Possession next. In this upcoming project, Robert Pattinson will not only grace our screens as a lead actor but also contribute as a producer. Though specifics about the film are currently shrouded in mystery, Finn has hinted at some intriguing concepts for where the third outing could take us.
