As a seasoned movie enthusiast who has seen more horror films than I care to count, I must say that the latest installment of “Smile 2″ has truly left me spellbound. The gripping narrative and chilling performances, especially by Naomi Scott as Skye Riley, have made this sequel a standout in the genre.
As the chilling echoes of “Smile 2” continue to haunt cinema-goers worldwide, visionary director Parker Finn has hinted at the tantalizing prospect of a “Smile 3”. With executives at Paramount Pictures likely pondering the potential success of another installment, Finn has made it clear that any future film would be crafted according to his creative vision. In other words, we might just find ourselves cringing in our seats once more, if and when “Smile 3” graces the silver screen.
Without a doubt, ‘Smile 2’ sets the stage for future films, and not in a repetitive way. The sequel showcases an outstanding performance from Naomi Scott, and it pushes boundaries when it comes to violence. Furthermore, its narrative scope broadens significantly due to its lead character being a pop star with a massive fanbase.
In the sequel titled “Smile”, the character Skye Riley (previously known as Scott) is a popular pop star who has recently experienced a terrible accident that claimed the life of her boyfriend. Having conquered her drug addiction, Skye is hesitant to ask for painkillers, leading her to seek help from her former supplier. This decision eventually connects her with a malevolent spirit whose curse quickly spreads. As the Smiler’s newest victim, it appears that Skye’s upcoming world tour might be delayed.
In conversation with Collider, Finn expressed his openness to creating another sequel under the condition that it allows for more captivating and contemplative character narratives. Given the quality of the first two films he’s worked on, it seems like a good idea to take his word for it. Here’s what Finn had to say:
“Indeed, there are numerous intriguing paths future developments could take regarding this topic. Personally, I’m captivated by everything that goes ‘bump’ in the dark and all the truly chilling aspects of the broader idea of this concept, as well as the entity known as The Smiler.
Indeed, Smile is not just an ordinary symbol for me; it serves as a means to convey deep and contemplative character narratives. Therefore, it’s crucial that we infuse a sense of intimacy into the storytelling, even if multiple individuals might be involved. The emotional connection is paramount. Moreover, I believe there are still some intriguing techniques hidden within Smile waiting to be discovered.
How Smile 2 Differs From the First
Finn opted to challenge himself by creating a more sophisticated sequel to “Smile” rather than repeating the original with similar characters. Given that the initial film earned $217.4 million with a straightforward narrative, it’s possible that Paramount would have accepted another version. However, Finn chose to elevate the concept. In “Smile 2”, the central character has more at stake and her trauma is more palpable, making the storyline slicker and more ambitious.
The second installment of “Smile,” titled “Smile 2,” has not surpassed $100 million at the box office so far, but it’s showing promising signs. In just two weeks since its release, “Smile 2” has garnered an impressive $86.1 million at the box office. Yet, what truly matters is that “Smile 2” is receiving rave reviews from critics. The sequel maintains a high rating of 85% on the Tomatometer at Rotten Tomatoes, indicating that critics have found more appeal in the sequel than they did with the initial movie in the series. If Paramount takes this as an indication, we might see “Smile 3” greenlit soon. However, it’s essential to note that Finn has a different project on his plate first: a remake of Andrzej Żuławski’s “Possession,” starring Robert Pattinson, which undoubtedly is something worth getting excited about.
