SNL Debuted A Political Family Feud Sketch Featuring Maya Rudolph And More, And Fans Are Loving It

As a long-time SNL enthusiast who has witnessed countless sketches and hosted numerous political satires, I must say that the latest Family Feud episode was nothing short of brilliant! With Maya Rudolph reprising her spot-on Kamala Harris, James Austin Johnson’s spot-on Trump, and a host of other comedic veterans, it truly felt like a dream come true.

Among the many cherished recurring skits on Saturday Night Live, none have gained as much popularity or notoriety as their spoofs of the classic game show, Family Feud. These sketches mimic the beloved format, with Kenan Thompson portraying Steve Harvey, who entertains bizarre responses from unconventional contestants. Recently, SNL’s upcoming 2024 episode featured a return of Family Feud, introducing a political angle with Maya Rudolph and other prominent guest stars. The segment was quite the spectacle, and it appears fans are thoroughly enjoying it.

In the latest episode of Season 50 on SNL, Ariana Grande served as the host while Stevie Nicks was the musical guest. Prior to their performances, a preliminary sketch was presented. This sketch began with a news introduction from CNN’s Kaitlan Collins (portrayed by Chloe Fineman), who announced that due to former President Donald Trump’s refusal to debate Vice President Kamala Harris again, they had agreed on an alternative format – Family Feud. The scene then transitioned into the game show, where teams led by Harris and Trump were ready for their match.

In this sketch, Maya Rudolph as Vice President Kamala Harris and James Austin Johnson as President Donald Trump were back, joined by Andy Samberg as First Gentleman Doug Emhoff, Jim Gaffigan as Minnesota Governor Tim Wolz, and Dana Carvey reprising their roles as President Joe Biden. These actors first appeared in these roles during the season premiere. Additionally, Johnson’s Trump was accompanied by Mikey Day as Donald Trump Jr. and Bowen Yang as Senator J.D. Vance. The sketch also included a joke about the absence of Melania Trump, former wife of Donald Trump Sr.

The sketch humorously captured the vibe of a political debate, with James Austin Johnson and Maya Rudolph effectively capturing the vibes of the politicians they were playing. The faux Trump’s utilization of “the weave,” which was a reference to the former president’s stream of consciousness, was also perfect. Shoutouts should also go to Jim Gaffigan and Dana Carvey as well as Kenan Thompson, whose winning Steve Harvey impression is still top-notch. After seeing the sketch, viewers took to X to share sentiments like the ones below:

  • ‘Show me a good laugh’ SNL DOES Family Feud. – @24SevenEyes
  • Family Feud Election Edition is what we need right now. – @RyanBartholomee
  • This [SNL] Family Feud spin on the election is gold. – @SolomonPuryear
  • LMAO that SNL Cold Open was genius! Having a debate on Family Feud 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣 – @MatthewASoprano
  • Omg this SNL Family Feud is SO good!! – @GisellePhelps
  • We got a family feud sketch on SNL????? 😭 The drought is over. – @caliiinoel

This new comedy sketch underscores SNL’s commitment to showcasing renowned talent, portraying figures from diverse political backgrounds. It’s quite unusual to see such a multitude of experienced comedians appearing as guests. Yet, some debate that the producers are venturing into risky territory this election season, relying heavily on non-permanent cast members for these roles. Additionally, there are mixed feelings among regular cast members about stars like Ms. Rudolph taking on these characters.

Regardless, it’s hard to dispute the favorable response the show has garnered for its guest appearances so far. This Family Feud skit might be a standout, and I’m optimistic that we’ll see at least one more take on the Steve Harvey-hosted show before Saturday Night Live wraps up Season 50. Additionally, I’m curious to witness how the program will portray its versions of VP Harris, former President Trump, and other notable figures.

On Saturday evenings, or as it’s famously known, Saturday Night Live, airs at 11:30 PM Eastern Time on NBC. If you’re a Peacock subscriber, you can also catch up on previous episodes.
