On Saturdays, when the lights go down for Saturday Night Live, cast member James Austin Johnson isn’t just comfortable with impersonations – he’s got one specific one that keeps him constantly alert.
During a recent interview with GQ magazine, Johnson shared that he’s eager to mimic Adam Driver as he admires his acting skills. Yet, he admitted feeling apprehensive since he presented his impression directly to Driver himself, a star from the Star Wars series.
Performing an impersonation of Adam Driver can be quite intimidating, yet it’s something I truly enjoy. I adore Kylo Ren, Marriage Story, Girls – everything he does. He’s both hilarious and a genius artist in my opinion, and I even try to mimic his style. However, I find the concept of impersonations a bit degrading.
He added: “He is extraordinarily large, not just in physical stature but also in presence. He’s both fear-inducing as a person and awe-inspiring as an artist. Such a combination is rarely found. In fact, it’s uncommon to encounter a warrior who also has the soul of a poet.
According to Johnson, the driver’s demeanor mirrored his own impersonation of Driver. “I was putting on quite the show for him, and he was sitting there at the other end of the table, arms folded, seemingly relaxed yet watching me with a rather intimidating expression,” Johnson explained, further describing how the actor from Megalopolis seemed emotionless. “I believe that despite his jovial nature, not many people make fun of him directly. And you’ve seen how he handles the press. That was a bit unnerving. I had to suppress my feelings and try my best to emulate Adam Driver as well as I could.
As for the incident with Driver, he clarified his actions and said he found it amusing. To be honest, I didn’t see him chuckle, but he assured me that he thought it was a joke. I’ll trust his judgment on this one.
