SNL Star Michael Che is Making the Leap to Late Night Wih New Show

As a long-time admirer of Michael Che‘s wit and charm, I am thrilled to see him stepping into the big shoes of late-night hosting with his upcoming show, “Don’t Sleep with Michael Che”. With a decade under his belt at SNL and a proven track record of hilarious Weekend Update segments alongside Colin Jost, this move seems like a natural progression for the talented comedian.

Following the tradition of Saturday Night Live cast members transitioning to late-night hosting roles, Michael Che, who hosts Weekend Update on SNL, is poised to join their ranks. With ten years under his belt as an SNL member, Che has been developing Don’t Sleep with Michael Che, a project that’s only just getting off the ground. As reported by The Hollywood Reporter, this upcoming series will have a more spontaneous vibe compared to shows like The Tonight Show, but it will still feature a desk and couch, giving it a less scripted atmosphere.

It’s important to mention that the comedy special titled “Don’t Sleep with Michael Che” is exclusively screened for private viewings, and hasn’t been distributed or advertised as of now. Since phones are prohibited at these private screenings, you won’t find any clips from it online. Notably, Lorne Michaels, the producer of both Seth Meyers and Jimmy Fallon’s shows, who were previously cast members on SNL, has been made aware of this project by Michael Che. However, the future of this project is still uncertain.

Occasionally, I need to self-motivate to step onto the stage and experiment with new ideas because I’m prone to getting excited about a concept and then losing interest, causing it to fade away in my thoughts. At this point, I’m not sure where it might lead, but who knows, NBC might air it during the wee hours of the night!

Michael Che Has Not Planned His SNL Exit

Among former Saturday Night Live (SNL) members, none managed to continue as part of the cast when they took on their own late-night talk show roles. Time constraints for both positions seem to be a factor, but it’s worth noting that some performers have successfully juggled multiple roles in the past. For instance, Kenan Thompson acted in two seasons of a sitcom concurrently with his SNL commitments, and numerous cast members also engage in stand-up comedy during their time on the show.

After being on Saturday Night Live for ten years, it seems logical that Che might be contemplating other opportunities. Over time, fresh cast members like Kate McKinnon, Cecily Strong, Pete Davidson, and Kyle Mooney have come and gone from the show. Che was questioned by The Hollywood Reporter prior to the 50th season about returning for the next one, but his response was ambiguous.

As a cinephile, I strive to avoid dwelling on the thought because it seems to dim my cinematic outlook for the remainder of the year. Frankly, I can’t help but feel uncertain. Who knows what the future holds? All I can do is hope that I manage to make it through the year without letting this thought overshadow my love for movies.

The Weekend Update segments are among the most popular parts of SNL, and the annual joke swap between Che and co-host Colin Jost during the holiday season always makes headlines. The comedians are also good friends and frequent collaborators, as evidenced by their Peacock comedy special released earlier this year. At this point, a lot of fans might feel like the two come as a package deal, so it’s difficult to imagine a world where Che leaves SNL and Jost stays on.
