The latest findings indicate that while social media debates over Snow White may suggest it’s drawn into a cultural conflict, audiences nationwide appear unfazed as the film has been performing consistently well in both liberal and conservative cities. For more than four years, discussions about Snow White have primarily revolved around off-screen matters. It’s important to note that online arguments do not always reflect real-world sentiments, despite the internet’s amplification of such debates.
According to data from box office analysis firm EntTelligence, published by Deadline, the movie “Snow White” was unexpectedly popular in Red County cinemas compared to other films. It accounted for 40% of ticket sales and 43.5% of admissions there. However, 60% of its total ticket sales and 56.5% of its overall attendance (approximately 3.1 million admissions) were recorded in theaters located in Blue counties. It’s important to note that many theaters in the U.S. are situated in cities like New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles, which are predominantly Blue counties. This implies that audiences from various political backgrounds across the country watched “Snow White,” contrary to what online discussions might lead one to believe. Steve Buck, Chief Strategy Officer at EntTelligence, commented on this trend to Deadline:
No theater blockades occurred in red counties because of any issues related to Snow White. On the contrary, theaters in these areas saw higher-than-usual performance for a family or animated movie of this scale.
As a cinephile, I’ve noticed an interesting turn of events surrounding the casting of Rachel Zegler as Snow White. While some online discussions were heated due to this choice, it appears that decision has proven fruitful. The audience for Snow White was predominantly 30% Latino/Hispanic moviegoers, trailing behind the 43% Caucasian audience. Interestingly, Snow White overperformed in Latino and Hispanic markets such as Dallas, San Antonio, and Phoenix.
The most successful theater for the film’s opening weekend was surprisingly the AMC Disney Springs in Lake Buena Vista, FL, which is located in a Red state. This theater drew a larger crowd of moviegoers than any AMC or even the Disney-owned El Capitan theater in Los Angeles, California. It seems that the choice to cast Rachel Zegler resonated more deeply with audiences outside of Hollywood’s traditional centers.
‘Snow White’s Box Office of Highs and Lows
It’s expected that there will be extensive discussions about the box office performance of “Snow White,” given the $43 million opening is considered a significant disappointment compared to films like “Cinderella” and “Maleficent,” which opened above $60 million over a decade ago. Similarly, movies based on Disney Renaissance films such as “Beauty and the Beast” and “The Little Mermaid” raked in over $100 million during their opening weekends. Even “Deadline” points out that the limited box office potential can be attributed to a lack of demand for older Disney intellectual property, an observation we previously made. The fact that “Snow White” is performing on par with “Dumbo,” another classic Disney movie receiving a live-action remake, may explain why Disney decided to release other live-action adaptations of classic Disney stories such as “Pinocchio,” “Peter Pan & Wendy,” and “Lady and the Tramp” on their streaming platform instead.
In contrast to expectations given the reported high production cost, Snow White has been performing below average at the box office. However, it’s worth noting that despite the negative buzz surrounding it online, Snow White attracted more viewers than the top 5 films of the previous week combined. Interestingly, it holds the second-highest opening weekend gross of 2025, trailing only Captain America: Brave New World, which also faced its share of controversies. This situation underscores that internet chatter about a movie doesn’t always reflect the general public’s taste when considering Snow White, as its primary audience is likely too young to engage in online debates. Perhaps, amidst the nation’s division, kids simply want to watch the latest Disney princess movie featuring Snow White.
