As a gamer who’s spent countless hours immersed in the enchanting worlds of animated movies and RPG games alike, I can confidently say that I’m absolutely thrilled about Rachel Zegler‘s voice acting debut in Netflix’s upcoming animated masterpiece, Spellbound.
Rachel Zegler, who’s already demonstrated her live-action acting skills in films like West Side Story and The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes and soon to play Snow White for Disney, is stepping into voice acting with a fresh Netflix animated movie titled, Spellbound. In this film, Zegler lends her voice to Princess Ellian, who embarks on a thrilling adventure to rescue her family and kingdom after an unknown spell turns her parents into beasts. Netflix has recently unveiled the trailer for Spellbound, giving us a peek into the captivating and magical realm of Lumbria.
The vibrant first footage, which you can check out below, introduces Princess Ellian as a tenacious teenager and her parents, King Solon and Queen Ellsmere, as colorful-but-rampaging monsters. The story is filled with larger-than-life characters, stunning animation, and captivating musical numbers, and it promises adventure and heart in equal proportion.
Although Zegler has previously acted out a princess role in the live-action version of Snow White, voice acting marks a notable change in her career. Nevertheless, she is incredibly excited about becoming part of the Spellbound cast and expressed her joy about embodying Princess Ellian in an interview with Netflix’s Tudum, calling it “a dream realized.”
“Working on this project brought out the kid in me, as I was captivated by animated films during my childhood, such as Beauty and the Beast, whose enchanting soundtrack by Alan Menken, also the composer of our movie, sparked a passion. Films like these ignited my love for musical theater, a fascination that ultimately transformed my life.”
Spellbound Takes the Princess Story to New Heights
Under the guidance of Vicky Jenson, renowned for her work on Shrek and Shark Tale, Spellbound is a joint production with Skydance Animation. This project seeks to revitalize the fairy tale genre by weaving an original narrative that blends classic elements such as a kingdom, princess, king, queen, and a spell, alongside contemporary family themes. In a recent interview, Jenson underscored the significance of crafting a film that resonates with today’s viewers.
In my opinion, the narrative transcends the particulars of this family relationship. To me, it resonates with children and their parents, illustrating the sense of disconnection that can occur during growth, and the paths we must traverse to bridge that gap, endure it together, and emerge on the other side with a deeper comprehension.
Moreover, Zegler emphasized the essence of Jenson’s concept, expressing that the film offers an intriguing glimpse into a family’s dynamics, all while preserving the enchantment and magic inherent in traditional folktales.
“Spellbound skillfully explores sensitive topics using vivid imagery, captivating music, and symbolic storytelling, mirroring the challenges children may encounter in their lives.”
In the enchanting film Spellbound, acting heavyweights like Nicole Kidman as Queen Ellsmere and Javier Bardem as King Solon take center stage, joined by John Lithgow, Jenifer Lewis, Nathan Lane, and Tituss Burgess in key roles. Each of these talented individuals adds a distinctive flair to the movie, and their combined passion and commitment elevate Spellbound into an artistic masterpiece. The much-awaited production also boasts music and lyrics by Menken and Glenn Slater, renowned for their work on Beauty and the Beast and Tangled.
