So Many Past And Future Glindas Showed Up For A Wicked Event This Week (And Honestly I Expected More Pink)

As a gamer with a heart for musicals and a deep love for the magical world of Oz, I can’t help but be utterly captivated by the latest updates on Jon M. Chu’s upcoming movie adaptation of Wicked. With my fingers crossed and my heart pounding like Elphaba’s own green heart, I eagerly await November 27, 2024, when we’ll finally get to step foot back into Oz once more.

As a gaming enthusiast, I can’t help but get excited about movie musicals, a classic genre that has even taken home the Best Picture award on several occasions. The upcoming production that’s got me particularly pumped is Jon M. Chu’s Wicked, set to premiere in November. This week, I attended an event for it and was surrounded by so many past and future Glindas, making me wonder if more pink was on the agenda.

What we know about Wicked varies depending on how big of a fan of the Broadway musical you are. The upcoming movie is expected to adapt the first act of the stage musical, and some experts in that area recently got to see an early screening. Namely a group of Elphaba and Glinda alums from Broadway’s Wicked, including OG Glinda Kristin Chenoweth. Check out the image below, just don’t expect a group full of pink looks.

This emotion is undeniably love. Essentially, this image depicts a passionate Broadway enthusiast’s interpretation of The Avengers, featuring some of the most renowned leading actresses from Wicked coming together in anticipation of the upcoming film. Notable Broadway performers in this assembly include Katie Rose Clarke and Brittney Johnson, with the latter becoming the first African-American actress to play Glinda full-time on Broadway. They are also accompanied by composer Stephen Schwartz and director Jon M. Chu. Imagine the magic if they all sang together.

Erivo and Grande were clearly touched by this meet-up, and shared their excitement over on social media. Grande’s Instagram post spoke about the emotions of screening the Wicked movie for that group, offering:

Tonight was an incredibly emotional celebration of Wicked, sharing the stage with some of the magnificent and talented Glindas and Elphabas who came before us. This film is a heartfelt tribute to everyone – @kchenoweth, @idinamenzel, and our entire Ozian family who have breathed life into this story for 21 years. I’m incredibly grateful to play movie Glinda and stand beside the utterly amazing movie Elphaba, @cynthiaerivo. This morning, my heart is overflowing with gratitude towards our Broadway family. It’s an honor to share Oz with you all, forevermore. 🧹🫧

Wicked‘s trailer showed just how colorful and magical Jon M. Chu’s world is, including massive practical sets. It feels right that so many actresses who led the show on Broadway were able to see an early screen, and be honored for their contributions to the story. Erivo also posted on Instagram, with the caption reading:

Yesterday felt dreamlike, as I found myself among Elphabas and Glindas from various eras, all united by the art they’ve collectively nurtured. It was awe-inspiring to witness the fusion of stage and screen, with their melodies harmonizing beautifully. How fortunate I feel to be part of this enduring legacy. Last night, enchantment seemed to pervade that theater, and I reveled in its radiance.

It’s clear that the musical Wicked stirs deep emotions within those who watch it. These feelings are likely to persist when the show hits theaters soon. We can’t wait to revisit Oz, where we’ll uncover the untold story of Elphaba and Glinda before Dorothy’s arrival.

Wicked will hit theaters on November 27, 2024. For now, check the 2025 movie release dates.
