As a die-hard fan of Sohum Shah and Tumbbad, I am absolutely thrilled by the announcement of Tumbbad 2! The unique storyline, the dark folklore, and the rich Maharashtrian culture that this film embodies make it stand out in the horror genre.
More recently, actor and director Sohum Shah announced plans for Tumbbad 2 after the successful second run of the original movie in cinemas, sparking a lot of interest. In an interview with India Today, Shah stressed the distinctiveness of Tumbbad’s plot compared to other horror films based on folklore like Stree and Munjya. He clarified that it was not going to be just another grandmother-grandmother story.
When asked if it would be simpler to make Tumbbad 2 due to the successful horror-comedy genre established by Maddock, Sohum emphasized that there are notable distinctions between them. He stated, “I don’t see it as an issue. Those films are unique, and none of them resemble Tumbbad. The stories themselves have significant differences.
Sohum noted that Tumbbad is the unique movie centered around “grandmother-grandfather stories”. He explained, “Other films aren’t crafting grandmother-grandfather tales. Our narrative doesn’t take place in contemporary times. Tumbbad starts and concludes during a specific era. We incorporate a ‘rakshas’, a demonic entity. They don’t handle such themes.
The actor gratefully acknowledged the audience’s heartfelt appreciation for the successful re-release of Tumbbad. With the film doing exceptionally well at the box office, this has given Sohum the motivation to work on Tumbbad 2. He recently revealed plans for a sequel by sharing a short preview.
During the interview, Sohum – who is also the producer of Tumbbad – shared that the immense affection and encouragement for the film would facilitate the creation of Tumbbad 2. He went on to say that they are now in the process of wrapping up the script during pre-production, after which they plan to find the right financial support.
Additionally, it’s worth mentioning that Tumbbad draws inspiration from Marathi folklore and was shot in the actual state. The production experienced various setbacks, even being put on hold at one time, until Sohum and Aanand L Rai took over as producers after numerous script revisions.
Initially, Tumbbad was helmed by Rahi Anil Barve and Adesh Prasad as co-directors, with Sohum Shah, Aanand L Rai, Mukesh Shah, and Amita Shah serving as producers. As per the box office report from TopMob, its re-release managed to earn approximately Rs 1.50 crore on its opening day, which is three times the revenue it generated during its initial release.
