Solana release Mainnet Beta Update to Address Network Congestion

Developers at Solana have rolled out a new beta version, v1.17.31, to help manage network congestion. This update, available since April 12, has undergone testing for three days and is now suggested for widespread use among mainnet beta validators.

This patch is designed to reduce network traffic and enhance Solana’s performance. It brings about significant upgrades, such as distinguishing between packed staked and non-staked data, a more streamlined packet aggregation method, a banking stage filter for forwarding packets, and stricter regulations on the number of minimal streams per second for validator nodes.

Anaza, a developer on the Solana platform, recommends validators update to the most recent patch only if their stake holds less than a 5% share. By adopting this careful strategy, validators help maintain a seamless transition and reduce the risk of interruptions.

The Solana network was overloaded with activity and meme coin crazes, causing around three-quarters of transactions to fail. Developers were making efforts to resolve these issues, which the co-founder of Solana explained were just bugs in the system, not fundamental network flaws.

The Solana Foundation recognizes the high demand for block space and apologizes for the delayed patch releases leading to network congestion. Austin Federa, the strategy lead, acknowledges the developers’ diligent work but admits that the current demand exceeds their ability to intervene quickly. However, the team is working on releasing the initial patch and planning future updates to enhance network performance and address congestion concerns.
