Some Big-Name Directors and Studios Turned Down The Apprentice

As a cinephile who has spent countless hours delving into the intricacies of filmmaking and politics, I find myself both captivated and disheartened by the journey of Ali Abbasi’s biopic on Donald Trump titled “The Apprentice.” The challenges this director faced in bringing this story to life are a testament to the power of art in a politically charged climate.

Filmmaker Ali Abbasi dared his professional reputation by deciding to direct the upcoming biographical film about the ex-U.S. President Donald Trump titled “The Apprentice.” Given his previous work dealing with controversial real-life subjects, this project seemed fitting for him, but other directors and distributors were hesitant to take on such a risky venture. Abbasi has openly discussed the challenges he faced in producing the film and finding a distributor, even encountering broadcast networks like ABC and CBS that declined to air the movie during commercial breaks. As the 2024 election approaches, more information about the challenging production process is surfacing.

In this current political environment, many filmmakers find it too risky to delve into the narrative of presidential candidate Trump, as stated by Abbasi in an interview with Le Figaro. The director revealed that acclaimed directors like Paul Thomas Anderson and Clint Eastwood declined the chance to direct the contentious tale of the former businessman’s political ascension.

Paul Thomas Anderson, director of ‘Punch-Drunk Love’ and ‘Licorice Pizza’, opted against directing the biopic due to unknown factors, potentially scheduling conflicts given his upcoming film release in August 2025. Clint Eastwood, known for his conservative political leanings, may have declined due to beliefs that could be at odds with the project, although the exact reasons behind their decisions remain speculative. However, it is clear that Abbasi was an ideal choice for the biopic.

The Rocky Road to Distribution

Despite Abbasi’s open admiration for the controversial narrative, the public at large has shown apprehension towards the depiction of the former president in this biopic. The film has stirred up so much debate that even actors like Sebastian Stan, portraying a young Trump, and Jeremy Strong, playing his questionable mentor, have felt compelled to defend their decision to take on these potentially unflattering roles.

It was challenging for writer Gabriel Sherman to secure a director; he penned the script for ‘The Apprentice‘ six years ago, and it took him around two years to locate a director willing to undertake the task.

Despite Abbasi’s arrival, the problems persisted in the project. Notably, all major Hollywood studios like Warner Bros, Paramount, Universal, Searchlight, Sony Pictures Classics, Focus, A24, HBO, and Lionsgate rejected distributing the film. Streaming giants such as Netflix, Amazon, Disney+, and Apple also declined. In the end, it was an independent studio, Briarcliff Entertainment, who bravely took on the task of distributing the movie before the 2024 U.S. election.
