Someone Asked Tim Burton If He’ll Work With Johnny Depp Again. An Edward Scissorhands Sequel Is Out, But He Talks ‘Bouncing Ideas’ And More

As a gamer with years of experience under my belt, I can confidently say that Tim Burton’s movies are as much a part of my childhood as the games I used to play. The release of Beetlejuice 2 was like stumbling upon an old friend you thought you’d never see again. But alas, it seems that the master of gothic-style filmmaking has more tricks up his sleeve.

The much-anticipated follow-up to Tim Burton’s “Beetlejuice” was a success at the cinemas and received positive feedback from viewers. Critics described it as a “whimsically macabre” continuation, which leaves us wondering if this gothic filmmaker has more legacy sequels in his pipeline. Although Burton announced an upcoming “Edward Scissorhands” sequel, he didn’t rule out the possibility of continuing to brainstorm ideas with frequent collaborator Johnny Depp in the future.

Tim Burton, renowned for hits like “Beetlejuice” and “Batman Returns”, has also produced successful sequels. Yet, there are some sequel concepts he firmly opposes. For instance, he declined the request for a “Nightmare Before Christmas 2”. Similarly, the Academy Award winner has turned down proposals for another “Edward Scissorhands” sequel, explaining his stance in an interview with Indiewire.

There are some movies I don’t feel should have a follow-up. For instance, I didn’t consider making a sequel to ‘Edward Scissorhands’ as it seemed like a standalone story. Similarly, I didn’t envision a sequel for ‘The Nightmare Before Christmas’ because it felt self-contained. In my opinion, some stories are better off untouched and that includes these two.

It wouldn’t be unfair to suggest that the director of “Big Fish” might not have wished for a sequel to “Edward Scissorhands.” Despite my fondness for Tim Burton’s movie, I feel that the film’s conclusion, with Winona Ryder’s character Kim as an old woman narrating the story to her granddaughter and Edward creating ice sculptures forever, seems to have wrapped up rather nicely. The tale of the ageless humanoid provided a satisfying end, and I don’t see much room for continuation.

Tim Burton often incorporates familiar actors into his unique blend of dark and quirky films, such as his then-spouse Helena Bonham Carter, Christopher Lee, Michael Keaton, among others. However, Johnny Depp stands out as a frequent collaborator, appearing in eight of Burton’s movies. If a sequel to Edward Scissorhands ever comes to fruition, Burton has expressed enthusiasm about working with Depp again, and I eagerly anticipate it.

When it comes to my film projects, I rarely have a specific actor in mind at the outset. Instead, casting decisions are typically influenced by the nature of the project itself. Filmmaking is essentially a collaborative effort, where exchanging and refining ideas with those around you is crucial.

It’s no surprise that Tim Burton prefers to cast actors according to the roles he creates. With every role Johnny Depp has played in Burton’s films, he seems perfectly suited for the Golden Globe-winning director’s universe. While it may not be intentional, Burton appears to tailor his characters around Depp’s exceptional abilities to transform himself. In essence, we owe Burton for providing Depp with opportunities to display his diverse acting talents, resulting in emotional yet quirky performances across all of Burton’s creations.

A sequel to “Edward Scissorhands” is not in the works, but director Tim Burton is moving forward with his plan to remake the 1950s sci-fi film “Attack of the 50 Foot Woman.” Given Burton’s skill at blending practical and computer-generated imagery, I have no doubt that he will bring a fresh, intriguing take to this updated version. Since there hasn’t been any news about casting yet and Johnny Depp is gradually making his way back into Hollywood, it’s possible that this film could reunite the two collaborators for their ninth project together.

You can watch the Tim Burton classic Edward Scissorhands available on your Hulu subscription, Peacock subscription, and Paramount+ subscription.
