As a seasoned gamer with decades of experience under my belt, I must say that the recent success of Nintendo’s foray into Hollywood with “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” has left me both impressed and excited for what comes next. With the studio looking to mine its IP for spinoffs, one project that has caught my attention is a live-action “The Legend of Zelda” movie by Maze Runner director Wes Ball.
However, the idea of another “Zelda” project sparked my curiosity when I heard that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller are considering adapting the beloved game “The Wind Waker.” As a fan who’s always been partial to the more animated look of “Wind Waker,” I can’t help but hope that their dream comes true.
If Nintendo decides to greenlight an animated Zelda movie, Casey and Miller would be the perfect choices for the job, especially since many fans were hoping for an animated adaptation when the live-action version was announced. With “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” doing well at the box office, I can’t help but wonder if this could be the start of a beautiful friendship between Nintendo and these talented writers.
Now, if only they could figure out how to make a live-action Link that doesn’t look like a rejected Power Rangers reject… I guess we’ll have to wait and see!
For nearly half a century, I’ve admired how Nintendo guarded their beloved creation, Super Mario Bros. But with the blockbuster success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, they’ve truly hit paydirt!
Currently, the studio is planning to exploit its intellectual properties for spin-offs, and one of the projects under development is a live-action movie version of “The Legend of Zelda,” directed by Wes Ball, who previously worked on “The Maze Runner.” Although fans are anxiously waiting for news about this film, other video game movie writers have an idea brewing for another Zelda project, focusing on adapting a specific Zelda video game.
The Legend of Zelda: Into the Zelda-Verse
In a recent conversation with IGN, writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller from Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hinted at possible future projects. Although they couldn’t disclose details about some of their upcoming titles, they were candid about their desire to create an adaptation of the 2002 game, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker. Miller shared that:
I believe another straightforward question we could answer is about a Zelda film. You see, the movie is currently in production and we’re not involved in it. However, considering our fondness for The Wind Waker game, I think a Wind Waker spin-off could be intriguing after they release the main Zelda film. It’s an idea worth considering, don’t you think?
Although Wes Ball’s film may delve into the realm of epic fantasy similar to the “Dungeons & Dragons” movie or “Lord of the Rings”, “The Wind Waker” presents a more animated style for the character of Link and the world of Hyrule.
As someone who has grown up watching both live-action and animated Spider-Man films, I believe that a Wind Waker series could be successful if it gets the green light. Having been captivated by the unique blend of action, adventure, and storytelling in the Spider-Verse movies, I can see the potential for a similar approach with The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker.
Growing up as a fan of both franchises, I think that a Wind Waker series could strike a chord with fans who appreciate engaging narratives and visually stunning worlds. With the success of animated adaptations like Avatar: The Last Airbender and Castlevania, it’s clear that there is an appetite for high-quality animated content.
That being said, I understand that creating such a series would require careful planning and execution to ensure that it resonates with fans of both franchises. It’s essential to stay true to the spirit of Wind Waker while also incorporating elements from Spider-Man that make the character relatable and engaging for a wider audience.
In conclusion, I believe that a Wind Waker series could be successful if executed well, given my personal experience with both franchises and the success of other animated adaptations. With the right team behind it, I’m confident that this series could become a beloved addition to the world of animation.
The Legend of Link
In essence, the legends woven into the Zelda series often invite fresh interpretations due to the periodic resetting of the Hyrule universe in each new installment, allowing for a unique narrative; however, familiar figures such as Link, Zelda, Ganon, and supporting characters maintain their consistent roles.
This format is quite standard among many Japanese properties, and both the Final Fantasy franchise and the Mobile Suit Gundam series follow this pattern. Notably, it allows for various interpretations, as demonstrated by titles like Final Fantasy VII that spin off from the original.
Fans can anticipate that the live-action Zelda will follow a unique storyline, but if The Wind Waker is ever adapted, it’s important to keep in mind that it may have different fan expectations due to its distinctive narrative.
Even though the Sonic films have been successful at the box office, it appears that Casey and Miller could be ideal picks if Nintendo decides to create an animated Zelda movie. Given that spectators had expected an animated film when the live-action Zelda movie was announced, this possibility seems fitting.
The live-action Legend of Zelda hasn’t got a confirmed release date yet, but moviegoers can catch Sonic the Hedgehog 3 in cinemas right away.
