Sonic Movie Team Offers Hilarious Advice to Shrek 5 Amid Design Backlash!

Over the past week, viewers got their first glimpse of the upcoming movie Shrek 5, sparking a range of reactions. Clips released by DreamWorks Animation and Universal Pictures showcased revamped designs for Shrek and some of his companions. While some appreciated these changes, others argued that the original designs should have been maintained. As more opinions roll in, the team behind the Sonic the Hedgehog series is the latest to voice their thoughts, offering a positive response.

It’s no secret that the Sonic team has experienced criticism when it comes to character designs, as was evident with the initial response to the look of the blue speedster in the live-action trilogy. Now, the TikTok account for the Sega-produced film franchise has shared a humorous video offering tips to “green ogres.”

The amusing video showcases for a moment the original Sonic design, then shifts to the revised one used in the final 2020 movie version. I’m someone who appreciates it when creative professionals take advantage of viral events as inspiration for humor (and self-deprecation). Bravo to the person who thought of this concept; though the video may seem subtle at first glance, its underlying message and joke are undeniably clear.

Initially, the criticism towards Sonic’s initial appearance was no joke; it was quite serious. At that point in time, it seemed like the filmmakers were aiming for a design that would blend better within the live-action world. This led to some changes such as making Sonic leaner and giving him teeth. Longtime fans of the character expressed strong emotions on social media platforms, which prompted Paramount Pictures to delay the release of Sonic the Hedgehog. Eventually, they adjusted the design to match the video game versions more closely.

Regarding the upcoming movie “Shrek 5”, DreamWorks and Universal recently unveiled a short clip, featuring the return of Shrek, Princess Fiona, their teenage daughter Felicia, and Donkey. However, some viewers have criticized that the ogre family’s heads appear older, while others yearn for the designs from the initial four films. In the midst of this, a TikToker claimed to have improved the animation, which garnered positive feedback from fans as seen on their social media responses.

Details about the fifth movie in this popular series have yet to be disclosed, but it’s confirmed that long-time franchise directors Walt Dohrn and Conrad Vernon are helming the project. Additionally, original voice talents Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy will return as Shrek, Fiona, and Donkey respectively, with Zendaya joining the cast as a new character named Felicia. At this point, it’s clear that there’s some continuity in the creative team behind the scenes.

From my perspective, it seems unlikely that the success of the movie based on fairy tales will be high. While fans are certainly entitled to their thoughts, it’s important to remember that filmmakers have a unique creative vision to bring to life. Considering that over 14 years have passed since the fourth film was released (which is now available for streaming with Max), it’s understandable that changes would be made. Whether or not the team takes our advice, I still find the amusing TikTok message enjoyable.

The fifth movie in the Shrek series, titled Shrek 5, is expected to be released in theaters on December 23, 2026. Until then, you can watch the initial three films by subscribing to Peacock, and the fourth film on Max (previously known as HBO Max).
