As a seasoned movie-goer with a penchant for reminiscing the golden age of comedy and a particular fondness for Jim Carrey, I must admit that his latest return to the big screen as Doctor Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 has brought a twinkle of nostalgia to my eyes.
It’s intriguing when actors speak candidly about their decisions to take on a new role, and the latest to do so is none other than Jim Carrey. After wrapping up Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey announced his semi-retirement from acting. In April 2022, he stated, “I’m retiring…probably,” feeling that he had “enough, done enough, I am enough.” The popular comedian and actor mentioned that a script of exceptional quality would be needed to draw him back. Interestingly, here we are with Carrey reprising his role as Doctor Robotnik in Sonic the Hedgehog 3. However, it wasn’t an extraordinary script that lured him back; instead, other factors came into play.
As a movie enthusiast talking to AP Entertainment, I, Jim Carrey, recently opened up about my past statements and shared the reasons that lured me out of retirement. It turns out, the motivation was as amusingly understandable as it gets. When the topic of my “gold ink” quote came up, I playfully quipped, “Well, that could’ve been a bit of an exaggeration, yes.
“I came back to this universe because I get to play a genius, which is a bit of a stretch.”
But Carrey couldn’t help but earn a few laughs for his actual reason. Underneath the thespian facade lies a man who enjoys collecting fine art and modern design. To paraphrase that one Vine from years ago, “He makes bad financial decisions.” The kind of art Carrey collects is notoriously expensive, and playing Doctor Robotnik next to a CGI blue hedgehog is an easy way to make a buck. We can only wonder how much Idris Elba got paid to say “He does look like a Pokémon. Pika, pika.” Carrey said of his return:
“And you know, I bought a lot of stuff and I need the money, frankly.”
‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’s First Reactions Are In
In Sonic the Hedgehog 3, Ben Schwartz once again voices the lead character, Sonic, with James Marsden reprising his role as Tom, Sonic’s human companion. Idris Elba returns to voice Knuckles, following his appearance in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and the successful Knuckles spin-off. Interestingly, Carrey plays dual roles in this sequel – both Doctor Robotnik and his villainous grandfather, Gerald Robotnik (one might wonder if he earned double pay for this). However, according to early reviews, it’s Keanu Reeves who steals the show in the third installment – a fact that seems rather obvious now.
Prior to its release on December 21, initial responses praise Sonic the Hedgehog 3 as a fitting conclusion for the trilogy. Although full reviews are still confidential until December 20, social media is buzzing with first impressions from fortunate critics and press members. Chris Killian of ComicBook commented, “It’s rare for each movie to improve in a trilogy, but #SonicMovie3 outshines the rest.” Furthermore, these early reactions suggest that Sonic the Hedgehog 3 includes two scenes following the credits. Additionally, it appears that the film has new footage right up until the very last moment of its runtime, even including mid-credit scenes.
