As a connoisseur of lifestyle and culture, I’d like to highlight the enigmatic figure that is AR Rahman, one of our nation’s most revered music maestros and record producers. Much like a melody that speaks volumes without uttering a word, Rahman maintains a low profile, choosing to keep his personal life a mystery. His closest collaborator, Sonu Nigam, has recently shed light on the composer’s unique persona. It appears that Rahman keeps people at arm’s length, maintaining a barrier around his personal space, a testament to his profound depth and introspective nature.
In a straightforward chat with O2 India, Sonu Nigam shared that AR Rahman never allows his personal relationships to influence his work. He reminisced about their collaborations on Daud, Dil Se, and Taal, where the musician consistently maintained a professional approach towards him. This was unexpected for Nigam during their initial collaboration on Daud, but he was taken aback in a good way by Rahman’s decision to grant him ample creative freedom instead of dictating instructions.
During his visit to the USA, the singer Sandese Aate found that despite knowing each other, AR Rahman maintained formal interactions with minimal exchanges. Nigam observed that Rahman is reserved in nature, choosing not to discuss others or take an interest in their personal lives. Yet, Nigam doesn’t see this aloof behavior as a negative trait.
Instead, Sonu noted that AR Rahman is typically reserved and respectful towards others, rarely showing emotions that could potentially hurt others. He added, “I’ve never witnessed him opening up to anyone. It might be different with his longtime friends who know him as Dileep, but I haven’t observed any signs of friendliness or close relationships from him. AR Rahman seems to focus solely on his work.
Even at the height of his success, the singer was struck by the record producer’s dedication to prayer and acknowledged that he always speaks kindly about others. He noticed that this music composer never acted overly familiar with anyone else. These behaviors left an impression on Sonu Nigam, who holds the belief that such conduct is commendable.
