Sony recently declared the live deployment of its Soneium blockchain network, following a successful four-month trial phase which saw participation from more than 14 million users.
As a analyst, I’m focusing on the innovative work being done by Sony Block Solutions Labs, Sony’s blockchain division. Their goal is to delve into the realm of safeguarding creators’ rights and ensuring fair value distribution between creators and their audience – a crucial aspect in today’s digital content landscape.
Sony Confirms Soneium Mainnet Launch
As a crypto investor, I’ve been eagerly following the developments of the Ethereum-based Layer2 platform, which underwent its testnet launch last August. This test phase saw over 15 million active wallet addresses and a whopping 50 million transactions. Now, Sony Block Solutions Labs has officially launched their blockchain – Soneium. This innovative blockchain is designed to streamline blockchain transactions for creators and their audiences, leveraging NFT-based fan engagement systems and an incubator program called Soneium Spark. According to the Director of Sony Block Solutions Labs, Sota Watanabe, the goal of Soneium is to make this technology accessible to everyone, even those without extensive knowledge about Web3. In other words, they aim to onboard ordinary people and democratize blockchain usage.
Dreaming (or soneium) is accessible to all. I strongly feel that creativity has the power to cross many barriers. It’s essential to establish an entertaining interface over Web3, as we have already built its financial foundation.
Sony Block Solutions Labs also released a statement about the launch, stating,
“Soneium is a public blockchain—an open network that welcomes everyone without limitations.”
Under The Hood
Soneium is constructed using technology developed by the Optimism Foundation, which utilizes Ethereum Layer 2 solutions. This blockchain employs the OP Stack and Superchain design to create what it calls a “blockchain that stirs emotion and fosters creativity.” The goal of Soneium is to connect the worlds of Web2 and Web3, offering a platform that is both inclusive and encourages artistic expression.
An Evolving Approach
This development signifies a substantial change in how leading entertainment firms are dealing with Web3. According to Sony Block Solutions Labs, the blockchain and related infrastructure they’re developing will enable them to foster broader creator economies and utilize the Soneium platform across their subsidiaries for films, music, and games. The Soneium Spark demonstrated this strategy, choosing more than 30 applicants from among over 1,700 applications. Watanabe commented on this approach.
Soneium streamlines blockchain interactions using user-friendly platforms and practical applications, allowing both creators and users to comfortably join the upcoming phase of the internet. Our goal is to safeguard intellectual property rights and stimulate global fan interaction, making it simpler for everyone to innovate and connect in significant ways.
As stated by Sony Block Solutions Labs, the mainnet launch is expected to broaden Soneium’s reach and enable the exploration of novel frameworks and applications that seamlessly blend digital and real-world user experiences.
