Sony Sets U.S. Theatrical Release for Anime Feature ‘Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom’

As a seasoned gamer with a penchant for anime adaptations of my favorite video games, I’m thrilled to hear that Sony Pictures is bringing Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom to North American theaters on Nov 8th! Ever since Momonga, the protagonist from my beloved Overlord series, was transported into his favorite game, I’ve been hooked.

Sony Pictures has announced that the animated feature “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom,” produced by their streaming service Crunchyroll, will have a cinema premiere in North America on November 8th. This film is a follow-up to the widely popular anime series “Overlord,” which is based on the novels written by Japanese author Kugane Maruyama.

In “The Sacred Kingdom,” the narrative continues from where season 4 of “Overlord” concluded. This tale, renowned for its unique premise, follows Momonga, a typical office worker who unexpectedly ends up inside his preferred video game. Produced by the Japanese animation studio Madhouse, this movie delves into the storyline referred to as “Holy Kingdom.”

Sony is set to debut the movie in IMAX and high-end large screen formats, with both Japanese audio (subtitled in English) and an English dubbed version available. The release date is scheduled for November 8th, where it will compete against several other films including Lionsgate’s holiday comedy “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever”, Focus Features’ award-contending film “Conclave”, and Vertical Entertainment’s sci-fi thriller “Elevation”, starring Anthony Mackie.

The movie titled “Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom” was steered by Naoyuki Ito, while Yukie Sugawara took care of the script coordination. Satoshi Tasaki oversaw the character design and main animation direction, with artwork provided by so-bin and music composed by Shuji Katayama.

American movie theaters are increasingly showing more Japanese anime, as the industry’s international influence expands. For example, Sony and Crunchyroll brought “Blue Lock: Episode Nagi” to U.S. screens on June 28 (it grossed $1.8 million), and Toho Studio plans to debut “My Hero Academia: You’re Next” in North America on October 11.

In recent years, Crunchyroll, a platform purchased by Sony in 2021, has seen significant box office success within its home market. For instance, the movie “Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero” released in 2022 amassed $38.1 million in North America and an additional $86.5 million internationally. A year prior, it distributed “Jujutsu Kaisen,” which earned $34.5 million domestically and a staggering $166.7 million across the globe.
