Sophia Bush has made a name for herself early in her career with popular TV shows, but her role as Ali in “The Stranger in My Home” demonstrates once more that she excels on the big screen as well. This film, adapted from Adele Parks’ novel of the same title, is a gripping psychological thriller that explores the unsettling question: What if someone you know isn’t who they seem? The suspenseful ending might just keep you on the edge of your seat. Interestingly, Bush also revisited her “One Tree Hill” background when portraying high school cheerleading.
Titled “The Stranger in My Home,” this film features Chris Carmack from “Grey’s Anatomy,” along with Amiah Miller, Chris Johnson, and Sophia Bush. As the lives of these characters appear flawless, a shocking revelation unfolds when Ali (portrayed by Sophia Bush) and her husband (Chris Johnson) discover that their daughter, Katie (Miller), is not biologically theirs due to a hospital mix-up.
The plot thickens with hidden secrets, deceit, and an eerie portrayal of Tom (Carmack) by Chris Carmack, far from the charming character fans have come to know on “Grey’s Anatomy.” You can stream this gripping mystery now.

However, before the storyline for the 2025 movie release’s characters takes an unexpected turn, Sophia Bush is once again in a high school gym surrounded by cheerleaders. The trailer has already shown that her role involves coaching these youngsters, and it’s been a while since she last portrayed Brooke, the cheerleading captain from “One Tree Hill.” During my interview with her and Chris Carmack about their upcoming thriller, I couldn’t help but bring up this sequence, and Sophia was happy to discuss filming it.
I realized this later on [laughs]! The scene we filmed towards the end of the movie was especially memorable because we had a national championship team performing many of the aerial stunts and tricks. In my mind, that sequence felt like the finale of the film. However, when I watched the completed movie with others, I was surprised to find that the very first scene was actually that same one I’d nearly forgotten about! It was exciting to rediscover it as a viewer during our screening.
It’s clear that The Mysterious House Guest managed to enlist some top-notch cheerleaders to execute the most intricate stunts. There was a hint of sentimentality as we witnessed Bush return to a fictional gym setting of a high school. Chris Carmack, a veteran of teen dramas, notably from the series ‘The O.C.’, where he delivered one of its most memorable lines in the pilot episode, let out a chuckle as Bush reminisced about the cheerleading scene for their movie.

In the movie, laughter was scarce after Carmack’s character arrived on stage. The enigma surrounding Tom’s intentions is one of the most intriguing puzzles in “The Stranger in My Home“. The actor from “Grey’s Anatomy” (who might have been influenced by the recent season’s dramatic cliffhanger) shared his thoughts on what initially attracted him to the film’s plot:
In my life, I have two precious daughters, and I believe that the most significant role I’ve assumed is being their father. This aspect has deeply resonated with me when considering why I was drawn to this story; it’s primarily about the intriguing inquiries and emotional exposure surrounding what family truly means. Who qualifies as family? What defines blood relationships? You might recognize these questions – nature versus nurture, and the unsettling revelation that the person you’ve cherished may not have origins as you once thought they did. This is a violation of reality in a way, as they remain who you believed them to be, but their roots are different from what you assumed.
In the not-too-distant future following the conclusion of Grey’s Anatomy Season 21, Sophia Bush made a guest appearance while Chris Carmack remained as a series regular. During this time, “The Stranger in My Home” was published digitally for widespread access, ensuring that readers would be able to differentiate between the characters portrayed on Grey’s from those of Ali and Tom.

Sophia Bush opened up about the elements within the “The Stranger in My Home” script that drew her in, specifically discussing the character of Ali. In her own words, she stated:
“Sophia Bush expressed what aspects of ‘The Stranger in My Home’ script and the character Ali particularly resonated with her, leading to her decision to join the project. She put it this way:
Wow, ever since the script landed in my email, I’ve been utterly captivated by it. The concept that a story often dismissed as mere folklore or urban legend could be true for a family, and indeed, seems to be, is intriguing. How does one make sense of it? What actions do you take when your life is flipped upside down? Of course, it’s significant, and moreover, shouldn’t it matter within a family. It’s almost like opening a Pandora’s box of questions, and the transition from this tense family drama to an almost deadly obsession, bordering on horror, drew me in intensely. I felt compelled to explore this further.
You can now access “The Stranger in My Home” digitally. This tale veers Ali away from paths similar to Brooke’s even in her most dramatic “One Tree Hill” episodes, but be prepared for Sophia Bush reprising her cheerleading role – albeit briefly – before the storyline takes a chilling turn that prompted both Sophia Bush and Chris Carmack to join the cast.
