Sotheby’s Announces Lineup for First-Ever Saudi Arabia Auction

On February 8th, Sotheby’s has revealed the schedule for its inaugural international auction taking place in Saudi Arabia. Named “Origins,” this historic event will transpire at Diriyah, a UNESCO World Heritage Site located close to Riyadh. Notably, this auction coincides with the unveiling of Sotheby’s new branch situated within the Al Faisaliah Tower, designed by renowned architect Norman Foster.

As a passionate gamer, I’m pumped about this upcoming auction! It’s stacked with an amazing assortment of pieces from both Western and Arab artists, not to mention some high-end luxury items and sports memorabilia. With Surrealism celebrating its 100th anniversary last year, it’s no surprise that the star attractions will be René Magritte’s “L’État de veille” (1958) and Fernando Botero’s stunning “Man on Horse” sculpture, each expected to fetch between $1 – 1.5 million USD! This is going to be a game-changer event, folks!

Noteworthy mentions also extend to George Condo’s “On the Lookout” and Andy Warhol’s Reigning Queens series, which gained media attention due to a high-profile robbery incident last year. Additionally, there are digital artworks such as an AI-created landscape by Refik Anadol and a captivating light display by James Turrell.

Distinctive works from trailblazing Arab artists will also be showcased, featuring notable pieces like Louay Kayyali’s “Then What??” (1965) and Samia Halaby’s “Blue Trap in a Railroad Station” (1977). Halaby’s art was even recognized with a special commendation at the Venice Biennale.

Not only will visitors be captivated by an array of stunning artworks, but sports enthusiasts can also marvel at some historic memorabilia such as Michael Jordan’s 1998 NBA Playoffs jersey and Cristiano Ronaldo’s jersey from the 2024 UEFA European Championships.

Before the significant two-day sale event, which takes place on specific dates yet to be announced, you can catch a glimpse of the 100 items up for auction during a free public display at Bujairi Terrace from February 1st through the 8th.
