Spaceballs 2 Director Confirms Sequel Will Mock Divisive Disney Star Wars Trilogy

As a movie critic who grew up in the ’80s and ’90s, I can confidently say that the news of a Spaceballs sequel has sent my inner child into a state of pure, unadulterated joy! With Mel Brooks’ classic comedy taking aim at the Star Wars universe way back in 1987, it’s about time we revisit this hilarious spoof and see how they tackle the new era of space adventures.

Absolutely! A sequel for “Spaceballs,” the popular Mel Brooks comedy, is currently being developed. In an interview with Esquire, director Greenbaum has shared some details about this eagerly anticipated (yet potentially superfluous?) continuation of the original film. Greenbaum confirmed that this will be a genuine sequel and will take aim at contemporary science fiction, focusing particularly on the “Star Wars” franchise.

Over the years, the amount of Star Wars content has grown significantly. It’s not only about the six movies that have been produced within the Star Wars universe, but there’s also an abundance of fresh content to work with. We strive to maintain the essence of the original while also moving forward, making it a true sequel.

Since the days prior to 1987, there’s been an abundance of “Star Wars” content that’s emerged, with Disney now holding the reins for new movies and shows. The Mouse House has produced a controversial trilogy and is still expanding the franchise on television through series like “The Mandalorian,” “Ahsoka,” and “The Acolyte.” Not to forget George Lucas’ critically-discussed prequels. It’s intriguing to ponder how “Spaceballs 2” will skewer the “Star Wars” saga, given that directors Greenbaum and writer Josh Gad have a wealth of material to work with.

Moving forward, Greenbaum shared his experiences collaborating on Spaceballs 2, describing the writer, director, producer, and performer as an individual possessing a remarkable blend of humor and intellect.

In earlier times, we didn’t have Netflix as an option for entertainment at home. Instead, we had seven VHS tapes that we owned, and one of those was “Spaceballs,” which I watched repeatedly. Consequently, I engaged in conversation with Josh Gad and eventually Mel Brooks to collaborate on this project. Working with him has been a pleasure, as he is currently ninety-eight years old but remains the most hilarious and insightful individual I’ve ever met. It’s an absolute delight!

Under the creative leadership of Mel Brooks, the movie titled “Spaceballs” offers a humorous critique of the Star Wars series and other popular science fiction productions. In this film, we find Bill Pullman, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Daphne Zuniga in prominent roles. The story unfolds in a far-off galaxy on the planet Spaceballs, where our protagonists, the rogue space pilot Lone Starr and his mixed-species companion Barf (half-man, half-dog), embark on a mission to save Princess Vespa who has been abducted by the malevolent Dark Helmet.

Right now, Josh Gad, known for his roles in Frozen and Pixels, is penning the follow-up story. He calls this chance a “dream realized.

We’re just getting started, but working with Mel Brooks himself is more than we could have ever hoped for. As avid fans of his work, Benji Samit, Dan Hernandez, Josh Greenbaum, and I are dedicating all our efforts to ensure that what we create will be a worthy continuation of his legacy within this franchise. We’re leaving no stone unturned to deliver the long-awaited masterpiece you’ve been waiting 37 years for – everything you’ve hoped for and more!

Amazon MGM Studios is currently working on a sequel titled Spaceballs 2, but they haven’t disclosed the official release date yet.
