As a longtime fan of Mel Brooks’ comedic genius and his timeless masterpiece, Spaceballs, I couldn’t contain my excitement when the sequel was announced earlier this year. With Josh Gad, the voice of Olaf from Frozen and an accomplished actor with a diverse resume, penning the script, it feels like we’re one step closer to revisiting the galaxy-far-far-away parody that I grew up loving.
The eagerly anticipated sequel to Mel Brooks’ 1987 humorous space opera, titled Spaceballs 2, has been making steady progress this year. This is thanks largely to writer Josh Gad, who recently shared an exciting update about the project with fans. Known for his voice acting role as Olaf in Disney’s Frozen series, Gad is working on the script alongside Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez (Detective Pikachu). In addition to writing, Gad will also star in and produce this long-awaited sequel. Mel Brooks himself is involved as a producer, and Josh Greenbaum (Strays) has been appointed as the director.
In an interview with Forbes about his upcoming comic book series titled “The Writer“, Gad spoke a bit about the advancements regarding the production of “Spaceballs 2“, a project from Amazon MGM Studios. Although no launch date has been announced, due to threats from the “Downside of the Schwartz”, Gad hinted that things are progressing rapidly and so far, everyone who’s read the script has been left astounded by its content.
If MGM hadn’t locked me up in their Culver City jail cells, I’d let you know that the draft is complete. Everyone who’s read it has been left spellbound. Working on this project with and next to Mel Brooks has been an unforgettable highlight of my career.
Throughout his career, Gad has taken on various roles, many of them being voice acting gigs such as in “Ice Age: Continental Drift”, “The Angry Birds Movie”, “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” and the popular “Frozen” series. He’s also a seasoned stage actor, having been part of the original cast for the Broadway production “The Book of Mormon”, earning a Tony Award nomination. Coming up next, you can catch him in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) series “Wonder Man”, due on Disney+ next year.
Will Spaceballs 2 Get the Title We Need?
One delightful aspect of the movie ‘Spaceballs’ occurs near the finale, when Bill Pullman’s character Lone Starr inquires from Yogurt (Brooks) if they might cross paths again in the future. “Perhaps,” Yogurt responds cryptically. “If fate allows, we may reunite in ‘Spaceballs 2: The Quest for More Money.'” Ever since the sequel was announced in June, fans have been eager to learn its title, but alas, Gad has remained elusive about this detail when asked directly. All he could hint at was, “Keep a close eye on this space.
At one time, Rick Moranis, known for his role as Lord Dark Helmet, proposed a sequel to the movie “Spaceballs” titled “Spaceballs III: The Quest for Spaceballs II”. This title is amusing, but it doesn’t matter much because recent news from Gad suggests that things are moving forward. It’s been a long journey to reach this stage, and although some original cast members like John Candy, Joan Rivers, and Dick Van Patten have sadly passed away, we hope for fresh talent that can match their stellar performances.
