‘Spawn’ Movie on the Hunt for a Director

‘Spawn’ Movie on the Hunt for a Director

As a long-time fan of Todd McFarlane and his iconic comic book character Spawn, I’m beyond excited about the latest developments in the upcoming movie adaptation. McFarlane’s passion for the project has been evident for years, and it’s heartening to see that key milestones are finally being achieved.

Todd McFarlane has been promoting the upcoming “Spawn” movie for a long time now. He confessed that it’s been difficult for him, being so enthusiastic about comics, to wait as things progress.

I’m thrilled to share that an important milestone in the development of this project is finally coming to an end. The challenging phase of “hell” we’ve been through is ending, making way for a new beginning. This exciting transformation is based on the gripping Image Comics series about a once black-ops agent. Betrayed and ultimately killed, he strikes a deal with a demon in desperation.

As a longtime fan of comic books and horror movies, I’m thrilled to hear that King Spawn now has a completed script that’s drawn enough confidence from McFarlane and Blumhouse to begin meeting with directors for the movie. This news comes two years after they brought on board a team of talented writers, including Matt Mixon, Malcolm Spellman, and Scott Silver.

Once a director has been chosen, the team intends to negotiate with potential studio backers. However, it remains undetermined if Jamie Foxx, previously linked to the lead role, will stay on board, considering that each director brings their unique perspective to the production. McFarlane explains that this film is anticipated to be a moderately priced project, not a large-scale blockbuster, but more expensive than an average Blumhouse production.

I’m excited to approach our studio partners knowing that the success of R-rated comic book movies, like Deadpool and Wolverine which just released this weekend, and October’s Joker: Folie à Deux, a film I had a hand in writing, will only strengthen our position.

McFarlane describes “Deadpool” as a lighter R-rated film, contrasting it with a more serious and heavy R-rated movie like “Joker 2“. Our film will delve into deep, meaningful themes and offer significant reflections of the real world. If you’re drawn to thought-provoking drama, this production is rich in those aspects.

As a huge fan of McFarlane’s work, I can imagine how excited I was when he considered directing the project I’ve been eagerly anticipating. However, this production has faced setbacks – COVID-19 slowing down the industry and the writers strike halting development. As the creator of Spawn since 1992, McFarlane is known for his no-nonsense (or impatient, as some might say) approach. He’s admitted that waiting has been challenging for him. But Blum shared a piece of advice that McFarlane once found irritating, but now recognizes as sage.

Over the course of time, that conversation with him might have been the most insightful I’ve ever had, according to McFarlane. He remarked, “A movie gets made when it’s ripe.” I responded, “That’s simple for you to say, you’ve got ten films!” Yet, if you force things and attempt to save time by skipping essential steps due to artificial deadlines, you’re not doing your project justice.

On Monday, McFarlane and Blumhouse shared on Twitter the initial script page for “King Spawn.” According to McFarlane, reaching this stage was a significant milestone they had long anticipated.
