Spike Lee shared a sneak peek of his upcoming film “Highest 2 Lowest” on Instagram, which is a remake of Akira Kurosawa’s famous film noir “High and Low”. The movie stars Denzel Washington. In the post, Lee expressed gratitude towards the legal system for acquitting rapper A$AP Rocky, who is also in the film, on felony assault charges that were announced on February 18, 2025.
In addition to the description, Lee posted a scene from Rocky in a movie, dressed in what seems like an orange jail outfit. Details about the venture remain scarce, other than it being a new take on Kurosawa’s work, as stated by Lee through Variety. The storyline of the original film, “High and Low,” revolves around Kingo Gondo (a regular collaborator with Kurosawa played by Toshiro Mifune), a wealthy shoe industrialist whose chauffeur’s son is inadvertently kidnapped and held for ransom worth 30 million yen.
In an interview with Deadline, Lee mentioned that Washington is set to portray a revamped character originally played by Mifune, who is a renowned music industry mogul with a label under his belt and a reputation as the industry’s top ear. As for Rocky, while his specific character details remain undisclosed for now, he has been referred to as Yung Felon. Lee hinted that Washington will take on a supporting role this time, implying that Rocky will have the lead in the upcoming film.
This marks the fifth time Lee and Washington have worked together, with previous collaborations including “Mo’ Better Blues”, “Malcolm X”, “He Got Game” and “Inside Man”. Notably, “Inside Man” was released 18 years ago. The new film also features fellow rapper Ice Spice, Dean Winters, known for his role in “30 Rock”, and Jeffrey Wright, who has starred in “The Batman” and “American Fiction”.
Although an official launch date hasn’t been announced yet, it’s anticipated that “Highest 2 Lowest” will make its way to cinemas during the summer season. This upcoming movie is a collaborative effort between Apple Films and A24 production companies.
Denzel Washington Could Be Busy With Marvel Projects For the Foreseeable Future
2025 might see Washington’s only film release, given that he could be occupied with a significant Marvel role. The actor has hinted at his casting in Black Panther 3 multiple times over the past few months. Additionally, rumors indicate that Washington is being considered for the villain role in the updated X-Men series within the MCU, which may suggest Magneto. However, no official announcements have been made yet, but it appears that Washington’s appearance in Black Panther 3 is highly likely.
Regarding Lee, he currently has several projects in the pipeline, such as “Prince of Cats,” a story featuring LaKeith Stanfield, which is an adaptation of Ron Wimberly’s graphic novel that reimagines Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet through the lens of ’80s hip hop culture. However, there haven’t been any recent updates on this project.
Lee had previously planned to oversee “Da Understudy“, a production that initially featured Jonathan Majors in the lead role. However, due to legal issues stemming from assault allegations and the negative impact on his career, it appears unlikely that this will occur as planned. It remains unclear whether the project will proceed without Majors’s involvement.
