As a long-time fan of the Sonic franchise and someone who has seen every installment multiple times, I must say that the latest addition to the series, Sonic 3, has left me intrigued about the fate of one of its most beloved characters – Commander Walters, portrayed by Tom Butler.
Warning: spoilers for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 are in play.
Over the past few days, the rivalry among the final films slated for 2024 has definitely heated up. Regardless of whether you’re following the box office clash between Sonic the Hedgehog 3 and Mufasa: The Lion King, it seems that tension is growing between them day by day.
Although it’s well-known that the Disney prequel ends with one of the saddest deaths in animated movies, the game Sonic 3 also features instances where Sonic seems to brush with death. One such instance might not be as grim as initially thought, upon rewatching the film.
What Happened To Commander Walters In Sonic 3, And What The Writers Had To Say
This past weekend, I chose to explore Sonic 3’s 4DX experience. The excitement arose after conversing with writers Pat Casey and Josh Miller, who have been crafting the Blue Blur’s blockbusters since the release of 2020’s Sonic the Hedgehog movie.
During a press day for their third installment, they were among my virtual visitors too, and it was then when I inquired about G.U.N. Commander Walters (played by Tom Butler) apparently being eliminated in a drone strike. Co-writer Josh Miller’s response to this query served as quite the tantalizing hint, as he shared this intriguing tidbit with TopMob:
He could not be dead. They just sort of imply he is, but he might have been hurt really bad.
The ending of Sonic the Hedgehog 2 has left everyone on tenterhooks due to the introduction of Shadow. However, according to Miller’s subsequent explanations, this development makes it necessary for Tom Butler’s iconic character in the franchise to come back even stronger than before. Since Commander was the one who initially informed us about Project Shadow and Walters’ role within that organization, a bit of narrative adjustment or retconning became essential.
According to more information from Josh Miller, both versions of this military figure (James Wolk) implied that G.U.N. had been in existence prior to being associated with Sonic the Hedgehog. This idea is further supported by a story detail shared in Sonic the Hedgehog 3, which connects everything together.
The device provided enabled him to initially present a summary of Shadow’s origin story, with further details to be revealed later as Shadow recalls them. This setup also offered an excellent chance for Shadow to defend himself, as Walters was the last thing he saw before the Tube started filling up.
As a passionate moviegoer, I must admit that the ending of Sonic 3 leaves me pondering about something bigger on the horizon. However, Commander Walters’ fate remains somewhat unclear, and after rewatching Team Sonic’s latest escapade, there seems to be some truth in Josh Miller’s not-so-subtle commentary.
The Sonic The Hedgehog 3 Clues That Seem To Support Commander Walters’ Survival
Upon revisiting Sonic the Hedgehog 3, I immediately noticed an intriguing detail in the scene where Director Rockwell (Krysten Ritter) is hunting for Commander Walters’ key to the Eclipse Cannon. One of the G.U.N. personnel in that same scene mentions a medevac helicopter has been dispatched to retrieve Walters. This information, however, seems to imply that Walters might still be alive, as medevacs are typically used to transport injured or sick individuals rather than deceased bodies.
Regarding the second exchange that deepens the mystery surrounding his death, it is when Tom, disguised as Walter, fools Director Rockwell. Her astonishment ensues upon discovering that he is still alive.
Despite the fact that the deception remains undiscovered in the movie, Rockwell continues to believe that Walters could still be alive. Given that Tom managed to survive a powerful punch from Shadow the Hedgehog (Keanu Reeves), it’s plausible that this assumption might actually hold true.
As a movie enthusiast, I find myself pondering if there might be additional insights into the fate of Commander Walters in Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hidden in a cut scene or an early draft of the script. For now, we must wait and watch the latest installment on the big screen. But don’t forget to revisit the first two Sonic movies and the Knuckles series through your Paramount+ subscription!
