Square Enix cans Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

  • Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link has been canned by Square Enix
  • The GPS-based ARPG was set to take place at a previously unseen point in the saga
  • However, the focus has shifted entirely to the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV

It appears that Square Enix has decided to terminate the development process for their mobile spin-off game, titled “Missing-Link,” which is part of their action role-playing game franchise called “Kingdom Hearts.” After experiencing several setbacks, including a postponement in its Android closed beta test, Square Enix will now direct their attention and resources solely towards the development of “Kingdom Hearts IV.

In a purportedly overlooked segment of the Kingdom Hearts tale, Missing-Link offers an immersive experience by combining Global Positioning System (GPS) and Action Role-Playing Game (ARPG) combat. You’d find yourself brandishing one of the legendary keyblades in fierce battles against waves of menacing Heartless intent on obliterating the world.

One significant feature that attracted buyers for Missing-Link was its incorporation of GPS elements. However, the specifics of how this functionality worked were not entirely transparent. In essence, players appeared to be able to traverse various global destinations from a distance, yet the mechanics behind this process remained unclear. This unique aspect might have raised some internal apprehension due to its unusual nature.

Be there or be square

It’s turned into quite a joke that Square Enix has stopped releasing games for mobile devices. Much of this can be attributed to the fact that Square Enix’s library, while often praised by critics, is exceptionally vast.

For numerous gamers in Japan, fresh mobile game launches are usually met with enthusiasm, but discovering a global audience can prove challenging. Interestingly, this wouldn’t have perturbed Kingdom Hearts, given its unique appeal. It seems plausible that developers struggled to align the core concept with their global strategy, and thus, it may be wise for them to concentrate on the forthcoming main series installment instead.
