As a seasoned movie buff with a penchant for foreign cinema, I can confidently say that the news of Squid Game‘s expanding universe is nothing short of exhilarating. Having delved into the intricacies of South Korean dramas and their unique storytelling, I find myself eagerly anticipating the creative directions Netflix and Hwang Dong-hyuk will take this phenomenon in its future installments.
Netflix has no plans to part ways with Squid Game anytime soon, despite the third season marking the intended conclusion as envisioned by creator and director Hwang Dong-hyuk. In his own words, “the Squid Game universe is not going to end here.” Quite the contrary, it seems.
In a recent chat with TheWrap about developing the second season of the acclaimed, Emmy-winning South Korean series, I shared my thoughts on the future of the universe I’ve brought to life and how it could evolve under Netflix’s guidance. As the mastermind behind the show, it’s important to understand that creative decisions ultimately rest with the streaming giant when it comes to this franchise. Eager to learn more? Read on, but be aware: there might be spoilers some viewers consider minor for season two!
What Else Can Audiences Expect From The ‘Squid Game’ Universe?
As a devoted fan, it’s no secret that I’m thrilled about Squid Game’s record-breaking success on Netflix. Given its status as their most-watched series ever, it’s only natural for them to seize every opportunity to boost profits and extend the universe. They’ve already aired the first season of the reality TV spin-off, Squid Game: The Challenge, although its controversy (mainly due to concerns about working conditions and contestant treatment) has been a topic of discussion. Another season is in the pipeline, with casting currently underway. However, it’s worth mentioning that Dae-su Hwang, the creator of Squid Game, isn’t associated with this reality series in any capacity.
Additionally, Hwang revealed to TheWrap that the speculated David Fincher-helmed, English-language spin-off (or adaptation) is currently being developed. While he was somewhat secretive about specifics, Hwang also hinted that “Netflix has a strategy” for the future of his renowned universe.
As a devoted fan, I’m hoping to find myself involved in the continuation of the Squid Game universe, perhaps as an advisor or co-creator. Time will tell! However, rest assured that Season 3 is not going to mark the end of this extraordinary series.
Looking forward, at least us enthusiasts can count on a confirmed and pre-recorded third season of the series arriving by 2025. Hwang shared that during the development of season two, he recognized that one more season wouldn’t suffice to convey the conclusion of this tale satisfactorily.
As a passionate storyteller, I found myself expanding my tale significantly, by incorporating numerous characters and additional events. Consequently, the episode count grew substantially. After six months immersed in crafting season two, I approached Netflix with a proposal to divide the season into two parts. To my delight, they wholeheartedly endorsed the idea, given the astounding success of Squid Game – it amassed an incredible 2.2 billion streaming hours within its initial 91 days, outshining any other original series in this regard. Not only that, but it made Emmy Awards history by being the first non-English language show to be nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. With such impressive numbers and historical significance, it was a no-brainer for them to renew it – they’d have been remiss not to – and now they’re capitalizing on its success, transforming it into merchandise, experiences, reality shows, and who knows what else.
There might be a witty commentary about this topic considering the nature of the program, yet our energy levels are drained due to excessive workload and low wages, so let’s put off exploring that thought for the time being.
