Squid Game Creator Talks 'Crazy' Season 2 & Coming Up With Series Finale

As a cinephile with a penchant for international cinema and a soft spot for gripping thrillers, I’ve eagerly awaited the return of Squid Game since its captivating debut. The anticipation has been palpable, like the tension in the air during one of Gi-hun’s high-stakes rounds.

The highly acclaimed South Korean Netflix series, Squid Game, which currently holds the title as their most-viewed series, is scheduled to release its second season on December 26th. While specifics about Season 2 are scarce, creator Hwang Dong-hyuk has hinted at its return, describing it as “crazy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Hwang attended an event in Los Angeles where he was quickly asked about Season 2. It’s been over three years since Season 1 debuted, and the excitement is definitely mounting. In discussing the challenge of continuing the narrative after such a successful first season, Hwang talks about the pressure he feels.

To be truthful, while working on Season 1, I hadn’t mapped out detailed plans for a potential second season because, at the time, I wasn’t certain one was going to happen.

If there’s another season, I had an idea for the story: Gi-hun would reject his current state from Season 1 and re-enter the games. His goal would be to dismantle the game itself. In Seasons 2 and 3, we would follow this emotional and physical journey of Gi-hun as he navigates through it.

In the show, Lee Jung-jae portrays Seong Gi-hun, a player identified as 456, who ultimately takes home the massive prize after outplaying all other contestants. Amongst the Season 1 characters, he’s the only one confirmed to reappear in Season 2. Moreover, Lee has shared some thoughts about revisiting the Squid Game world without the presence of other characters.

As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but express my admiration for the incredible effort put forth by my fellow colleagues and cast members in Season 1. With each passing game, we were faced with the heart-wrenching reality of saying farewell to so many talented individuals. Their passion and dedication truly shone through on screen, making the show a memorable experience for all of us involved.

With remarkable clarity, those memories resurfaced, and they seemed to intertwine with the story itself. Given that numerous characters met their end on that very set, it felt as if I was being drawn back to a place of torment. It was as if I could sense what the director envisioned for me and my character, so much so that upon entering the set, I couldn’t help but wish that more lives would be spared this time around.

The actor expressed the following thoughts about Hwang’s script for Season 2: “I never thought he could write it so quickly; I genuinely had my doubts. But when I finally read them, I was blown away, thinking ‘These are flawless, there’s nothing that needs to be altered.’ It was incredibly well-written, and I found myself in awe of this talent, marveling at his genius.

The End of Squid Game Has Already Been Written & Filmed

At the gathering, Hwang discussed the conclusion of the series. Moreover, he mentioned that he’s still working on post-production tasks for the third season, which is set to debut in 2025. As of now, there’s no specific launch date announced, so we assume they might be waiting for Season 2 to air and for some viewership records to be surpassed. Here’s hoping for the best!

In a conversation, it was mentioned that Hwang was discussing the final chapter of his much-adored thriller. Unlike some who might extend the narrative for financial gain through multiple seasons and offshoots, Hwang remained resolute in wrapping up the story with Season 3.

While contemplating the conclusion for Season 3, it seemed to develop organically that this would be the final episode. I felt that with this tale, I was able to convey everything I intended to express through the story of Squid Game and also from Gi-hun’s character perspective. I thought we had reached a point where no more stories were needed from here.
