As a long-time fan of Korean dramas and movies, I must say that the return of T.O.P., aka Choi Seung-hyun, to the small screen through “Squid Game” Season 2 has been quite an eventful one. It’s no secret that his legal issues in the past have left a mark on his career and personal life, but it’s heartening to see him take a bold step forward and dive back into acting.
The second installment of Squid Game is nearly upon us, with fans excited to discover the fresh obstacles that await the ensemble cast. It’s been announced that T.O.P., whose real name is Choi Seung-Hyun and a member of the renowned South Korean K-pop group BIGBANG, will make his comeback to acting after a 7-year absence in this much-awaited sequel to the globally acclaimed series. The critically-acclaimed South Korean drama, conceived by director Hwang Dong-hyuk who won an Emmy, has garnered significant attention among international viewers and critics since its premiere in 2021.
In this suspenseful TV show, the plot focuses on a competition where 456 individuals in dire financial straits engage in a sequence of kid’s games, putting their lives at stake, all in pursuit of monetary gain. This intriguing setup sparks a wider dialogue about the societal structures that foster inequality globally.
In the upcoming season of “Squid Game,” K-pop artist T.O.P assumes the role of Player 230, the season’s villain, alongside Lee Jung-Jae, Park Gyu-Young, and Park Sung-Hoon. Given T.O.P.’s talent for portraying intricate characters in his acting ventures, fans are thrilled at the prospect of watching him on screen again. With its reputation for delivering unpredictable storylines, this new season is shaping up to be an exhilarating journey, a trait well-known from the hit Netflix series “Squid Game.
Who Is T.O.P’s Character in ‘Squid Game’ Season 2?
The Netflix trailer for Season 2 unveiled that T.O.P’s character is Player 230, who goes by Thanos as well. This sneak peek did a fantastic job at hinting at the mounting tension in the upcoming season of this popular drama series. In a Netflix “Get to Know the Cast” video, T.O.P discussed his character and how he found himself in such a life-threatening situation.
Thanos used to be a rapper but has since retired. Entrusting his savings to Myung-gi after being impressed by his YouTube videos, Thanos took a significant risk and invested everything. Unfortunately, he lost every penny, causing him to seek new opportunities, which ultimately led him to participate in a different endeavor.
In a subtle manner, the rapper portrayed the chain of events that led his character into dire financial circumstances and prompted him to engage in the game. A scene from the video hints at an upcoming clash between T.O.P.’s character and Myung-gi, played by Yim Si-wan. As teased in the Squid Game preview, Myung-gi is a YouTuber who fell victim to a cryptocurrency scam and persuaded his followers to invest, causing them to lose their money. This fraud ultimately pushed Myung-gi to participate in the games, where he encounters Thanos, and their animosity becomes apparent.
A Controversial Casting Decision in ‘Squid Game’
Although some die-hard BIGBANG fans eagerly await the Korean rapper’s acting comeback, others harbor negative sentiments towards his participation in the highly praised Netflix series. The controversy originates from a legal matter that occurred in 2017 when T.O.P. received a 10-month prison sentence and 2 years of probation for unlawful marijuana use. Additionally, he was released from the compulsory military service required of all Korean men. What was supposed to be an exciting return has instead become problematic, and the director has openly discussed the backlash during recent interviews while publicizing the much-anticipated second season of Squid Game.
There were whispers regarding his character, and it took considerable bravery for Choi Seung-hyun to take on that part. Given our personal history together, I found him the most fitting choice. Despite the ensuing controversy, I remained steadfast in my decision as I had experienced a great deal with this actor beforehand.
In spite of the criticism, Director Hwang Dong-hyuk remained committed to his choice of actor T.O.P., believing him to be ideal for the role. He emphasized that T.O.P poured all his energy into this part, and his audition process demonstrated dedication and hard work. For them, working on Squid Game Season 2 was a valuable opportunity they didn’t want to squander. Together, they aimed to demonstrate T.O.P.’s talent and show audiences that he had evolved since before.
“Since this project required Choi Seung-hyun’s involvement, I had to demonstrate the outcomes. Consequently, I didn’t waver and proceeded with the collaboration. You might be intrigued as to why I was adamant about working with him, but let me clarify that I had my reasons for doing so.
The Grand ‘Squid Game’ Return Comes at a Cost
As a movie critic, I find myself reflecting on the intriguing absence of T.O.P. in the promotional events for Squid Game Season 2. The creator Hwang has explained his choice to cast him, but the ensuing uproar seems to have driven T.O.P. away from any public limelight related to the show. It appears that he’s opted for a more secluded existence, perhaps as a means of shielding himself from the critical gaze and embracing his second act in the entertainment world. This decision, while understandable given the controversy, is undeniably impacting the overall promotional strategy for Squid Game Season 2.
No matter the debate or disagreement, enthusiasts of the popular TV show are eager to discover what the creators have planned for this new season and to revisit their beloved characters once more on their screens. In keeping with the thrilling and unpredictable nature of Squid Game, viewers can anticipate an exhilarating journey and unexpected fatalities. The second season of Squid Game will be available for streaming on Netflix starting December 26.
