On March 2, 2025, the Academy Awards – which will air on ABC and can also be streamed live on Hulu – has revealed its initial lineup of presenters for the event. These presenters include winners from last year’s Oscars, among them three individuals who are presenting at an awards ceremony for the first time. Robert Downey Jr., who previously had been nominated twice before winning Best Supporting Actor for Oppenheimer in 2024, is one of those presenters. He’ll be joined by his co-star from Oppenheimer, Cillian Murphy, who was a first-time nominee and winner for portraying the lead role in the film.
In March, not one but two outstanding actresses will grace the Oscar stage. First-time nominee Da’Vine Joy Randolph is set to make history with her win, while five-time nominee Emma Stone, a two-time victor, continues her successful streak. Stone earned her first nomination in 2015 for Best Supporting Actress in ‘Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance)’, followed by her first lead actress win for ‘La La Land’ the next year. She was later nominated again for her supporting role in ‘The Favourite’ and went on to win for playing the lead in ‘Poor Things’.
It hasn’t been announced which categories these four actors will be presenting, but since the Academy often has the previous year’s winners present in their respective categories, it appears probable that Downey Jr. may hand out the award for Best Supporting Actor, Murphy for Best Actor, Randolph for Best Supporting Actress, and Stone for Best Lead Actress.
The complete lineup of hosts for the event hasn’t been disclosed just yet, but it’s confirmed that Conan O’Brien will preside over the 97th Academy Awards, marking his debut as host for the program.
This Year’s Oscars Are Not Without Controversy
Just like past Oscar races, the list of contenders for this year is not without its share of debate. The nomination of Emilia Pérez has been particularly divisive, as studio Netflix has recently distanced itself from actress Karla Sofía Gascón, who made history by being the first openly transgender performer nominated in the Best Actress category, following the resurfacing of offensive tweets she posted this year.
In a stirring development, the movie titled “The Brutalist,” helmed by director Brady Corbet, stirred up debates when it was unveiled that artificial intelligence (AI) was employed to refine the actors’ Hungarian accents in the production. Despite Corbet clarifying that AI was used merely in certain situations and the performances of Brody and Jones remain authentic, this revelation may have cast a shadow over the film’s potential major award recognition.
However, one major debate sparked by this year’s Oscars is whether they should exist at all. Notable figures in the entertainment industry such as horror writer Stephen King, Jean Smart from Hacks, and Rosanna Arquette of After Hours and Crash have suggested either drastically reimagining or completely ending the awards show following the devastating wildfires that swept through Los Angeles.
