Star-Studded ‘Othello’ Breaks Record For Highest Weekly Gross For a Broadway Play

Last week, the play Othello, featuring Denzel Washington and Jake Gyllenhaal, set a new record on Broadway by raking in an impressive $2,818,297.00 over the course of eight shows, making it the highest-grossing play in its history.

As we’re just two weeks into the previews, I can hardly contain my excitement! I’m about to immerse myself in a captivating journey with Othello, starting this coming Sunday, March 23. This thrilling production will only be available for a limited time, running through June 8 at the Barrymore Theatre. It’s going to be an unforgettable gaming session, where I’m not just a spectator but a part of Shakespeare’s timeless story!

Last week’s average ticket cost couldn’t be found right away. However, a week prior, “Othello” had the highest ticket prices among all shows at an average of $361.90 each, significantly more than the next closest price. During its initial seven performances that week, the play earned a total of $2.6 million.

The previous record for the highest-grossing play was previously held by “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child“, earning an impressive $2,718,488 during the holiday week that concluded on Dec 31, 2023.

The play “Othello,” overseen by director Kenny Leon, is chiefly produced by Brian Anthony Moreland. This same individual was also responsible for last year’s staging of “The Wiz.” Previously, Kenny Leon has directed “Purlie Victorious” and the revival of “Our Town” featuring Katie Holmes and Zoey Deutch.

Beyond his extensive film work, Washington has also graced the Broadway stage in productions such as “A Raisin in the Sun” and “Fences”, sharing the spotlight with Viola Davis. He has also performed in “Julius Caesar”, “Checkmates”, and more recently, the 2018 revival of “Iceman Cometh”. In these productions, he was part of a larger ensemble cast, including Austin Butler.

Gyllenhaal has appeared in three Broadway productions, including “Sunday in the Park With George” and more recently, “A Life” from 2019, a solo performance piece. Notably, he shared the stage with Tom Sturridge in “Sea Wall” during the same period.
